Question Leather conditioner w/silicone

Took my 928 to a detail shop. He used a leather conditioner(?) with silicone in it. He says he uses this conditioner on all his vehichles. Is it o.k. to use this product with silicone in it? I have heard that it isn't good for the leather. I would appreciate any comments.

No. Don't use it unless you want slippery seats!

and if your leather is aged any, then you will have a white residue (it will look like you rubbed lubriderm all over it)

I would stay away from products with silicone. Leather does need to breathe and silicone tends to prohibit that.
For older leather that as dried up a bit, I use the Leatherique Rejuvinator oil.
For new leather or any leather in good condition, I use Lexol-PH for cleaning and the conditioner afterwards.

Any good brand of leather specific cleaner and conditioner will do, the secret is to do it often to keep the leather supple.

Strangely enough, silicone based products are not much better on vinyl either. In the long run, the vinyl dries up and cracks. The only silicone based product that seems to work for me is Vinylex. And I tend to use it sparingly.

And if you ever want to dye the leather, I don't think the sillicone would do any good either.

remove it, your detailer is a moron. Take it off with dish soap and scrub. It maybe hard to take off.

Honestly then again i am sure its not the first time its been done, what seeems to happen is once the pores of the leather are clogged, you cant really remove it, you can remove the shine off it that looks like crap but i think when leather gets teh wrong stuff on it it tends to increase the wear, the look dirty and crack fast.

But i suspect all of our cars had some crap put on the seats at some time.

Paul, does the leatherique rejuvinator work as advertised and really soften up the leather ?

I need to order some of that stuff

Hey Ryan,

it actually works surprisingly well. Obviously, the worse the seat is, the better the results. Every time I used it, the results were beyond my expectations.
Follow the directions and you will be pleased with the results. Their cleaner is good also, but a bit harder to rinse than the Lexol. But I still use both Leatherique products together whenever I can.

Jeesh Paul - you would think you were some kind of leather expert or something!!!

P.S. If you are ever in Houston, I'd love to see your car in person.

I also like Leatherique although I use it only once a year. To maintain my leather in between major treatments I use Griots leather care, smells and works great!

Hi all at the shop we use a product called Malco Leather cleaner, it has acids that open up the pores and release the dirt simply spray on , dont let it make runs as these will be cleaner areas, then scrub the leather with a fine bristle brush followed by a damp rag then a clean dry towel,, after this we use leather protectant that has leather smell, this keeps the leather soft and supple, sorry i dont remember the name, by the way the Malco works better than the Lexol at cleaning the leather, I cleaned my whole interior in my living room.
