Default Paint Q: help, suggestion, recommendation

When i bought my black 85 i didnt' see these spots on the hood. the paint is still factory and has very good reflextion and depth still. there is a little oxidization that isn't that bad, just needs a good machine buff and regular care and will be fine. After my first wash i saw that these spots didn't wash off..
They look like large water spots, i grabbed some compound and lightly went at 1 of the spots, no luck. I took it to a paint guy(touch up guy) that i have used to do touch ups on my cars, he says its from bird crap not being washed off right away(possibly tree sap?)
He says he can't do anything about it, and i would need to repaint. So here is my thoughts and question... Basically its just on the hood and top of the front fenders only. It is more or less just some damage to the clear coat. Can that be wet sanded and re cleared? if i paint do you think i should just paint the front to try to match? I don't have the money for full strip and paint(done right) and honestly the rest of the paint is nice.
What do you guys think?

Not sure, but don't think clear coat was back in 85... check out Maguires, I had the same problem on my Land Rover, and they had a cleaner that improved it, but did not remove oxidation completely.

zoltan - mine's an '86 with exactly the same situation, mostly hood and sun roof, with very slight on top of fenders and roof. Looks great when wet and permanent water spots when dry.

Brian (Iceman) had mentioned that he vaguely recalls 85 & 86 only received clear coat...the "in" thing at the time for paint perhaps, but then Porsche gave up the practice for 87+ to the original paint-only process. I've had numerous passerby paint guys say it was clear and could just be re-shot and look perfect (especially since black is easy to match).

My thought was to go to a nearby body/paint guy that all the area Porsche houses recommended, and see what my options are. Unfortunately, AC repair is 1st priority at the moment, but I expect to find something out in the next week or so.

Otherwise, be it 85/86 only or 85/86 black only, whatever, I'm thinking the paint guys know how to tell if it's clear. I will likely go the clear only route, if the outcome is expected to be a perfect match to the rest of the car.

Check out http://www.paintscratch.com/ ( no affiliation) and give them a call. They may be able to tell you if you have clearcoat, and they have the touch up if you need it.

Please post this in the Concourse forum also. The people there are great and also do this for a living. I had some paint issues that they helped me through and I couldn't be happier.

Good Luck

let me know! I also think a wet sand and re-clear should be just fine, but im not an expert. there also isn't too many places in town here that i would have paint the whole car anyway! Ill take it to a real paint guy and see what i come up with if i don't hear anything different on here

My suggestion would be to wetsand with 1200 grit an rebuff and polish it. If it does not give the desired results rewetsand with 600 grit and recoat with at least one coat of color and then clearcoat. You get much better results that way instead of clear over clear.

thanks a ton wrenchtech, i am going to try 1 of the spots only, not the whole thing see if it works. I am handy with compounds and buffers etc... so if the 'easier' way wont work i will take it to a paint shop.

Don't be in a big hurry to go at it. Sometimes bird droppings eat right through the paint and down to the primer. Sanding or buffing may expose more primer, so go slow. A good reason to keep the car clean and covered.

All you need to do is polish a small area with a compound that has a cleaner in it. If the rag shows body color, you do NOT have clear coat, if not, you do. Clear coat is just what it implies, clear, so any body color on your rag indicated no clear "coat".
