Just started the 928 for the first time
 

Well this has been fun, as some of you know I got this car with a sink full of parts that the PO had took off of the car trying to do a water pump.

We did the whole timing belt thing and the only part that did not get come in a Porsche box was the water pump.

I got it from the parts supplier that i have used for years on European cars.

Well to make a long story short, Problems so far are, the bearing in the water pump sounds very bad, got some problems with the central warning indicator, (it glows faintly when all warning are off) for the brake light, which goes out as soon as i touch the brakes the first time and low coolant that will not go out when full.

So my to do list now is, and i am sure it is going to get longer before it gets shorter.

1. To put a real Porsche water pump on it before it leaves the shop or even gets driven.

2. Valve covers gaskets, I want to take a look at the chains and guides while i am there.

3. Oil pan gasket.

4. Transmission pan gasket.

5. Rear axle seals

6. Find out what is going on with the Central warning system.

7. Put something in the hole where the radio was.

Things i may have to do.

1. Motor mounts

2. Torque tube bearings

3. Leave lots of room on the list.


Also does any one know where this black plastic cover goes?
How about these other parts, for all I know they may not even go on this car, just parts that were in there when i got it. :rolleyes:

The plastic piece goes in the spare tire well, upper left-hand corner (driver's side). Covers some wires and stuff...

The brake light indicator is for the bulb monitoring - it is designed to stay on till you first press the pedal and then it tests the bulbs - if all is OK it goes out... supposed to work that way - though it should be bright (enough to read) until it goes out.

Glad another one is almost resurrected!

The larger rubber strip in the last photo goes over the edge of the front of the windshield wiper cowl. The bottom thin strip looks like body panel welt, perhaps front fender to bumper cover. I can't place the the top two strips.

Ain't it the coolest thing. Mine had been dead for 18+ years until I got it running.

Sorry, but I don't recognize any of those parts.

some of the flex stuff below looks like it might be trim - do you have black plastic bead (tube section at the top) between the fenders and the front clip? sama at the rear between the metal side fenders and plastic rear end....

It isn't that exact shape (has a mounting flange) but if it were torn or cut out it might look like that...

coolant level warning may be the sender in the fill/expansion tank or the wiring or connections. Check the connector - trace it back from the fill compartment lid. For the switch in the tank - try with the tank connector off (fiddly) & left disconnected & with the connections shorted (any difference on the display)...

Top two pieces of plastic/rubber trim.... sunroof ( if it has one) maybe - looks the right size.

The top two of "other" look like oil pan gasket to me.

Ok, so brake part of it is working ok, that is a good thing, but the indicator which is #7 in the owners manual, that's the center one, stays at about 1/2 brightness, when I had all of the warning lights off.

The coolant light went off when we were filling it and then came back on and stayed on when it was full of coolant. I guess i have to find the wiring diagram in the CD's i got from Jim.

My guess is i will find some kind of ground problem.

Are there any sources for the paper manuals?
I would like to have them also.

I really am looking forward to driving this car and comparing it to the Corvette.
One thing is for sure, they are very different in design philosophy.

The top piece in the last picture looks like a trim piece at the rear hatch where the carpet meets the body panel along the outermost edge. I know that doesn't sound that clear but just open the rear hatch and put the sharp points toward the front of the car. Then it might become obvious (or not)
