Default help with shifter components

okay i picked up a 85 5-speed over the weekend(pics to come)
the shifter boot attatches to nothing, its just there. from looking at pics of shifter boots, it seems that the boot is right, just nothing there to connect to.
there is just a metal plate cutout for the shifter and the surrounding center console, it seems im missing what this shifter connects to.
If Jim chimes in here, could you point me to where its at on your site so i can add it to my cart and checkout with the rest of my stuff

Good choice. Mine's also an '85 5-speed. Can you take a pic of the shifter? Sounds like the shifter boot is worn off from the ****.

Go to the last page and last picture of my SC build site ( http://norcal928.org/DIYSC/ ) There is a picture of how my shifter looks. It's a small picture but at least it will give you an idea what it looks liks like.

As a first mod, get yourself a set of chips. For my '85, besides a sueprcharger, it was the best bang for the buck by far ($75 onm e-bay). I've gained around 25hp with only the chips.

Imo000,
your picture doesn't help much. My leather is attatched to the ****, but that is it. The bottom part connects to nothing, and since it is like elastic on the bottom there is nothing to attatch the boot to. There is only metal there with glue residue and i know the actual boot couldn't get glued to the metal!

Ok, now I know what you are missing on your shifter. There should be a black plastic, slightly curved, rectangle plate that the bottom of the boot sliders over, then the plate has a claw that will snap into place around the inside edge of the console. The inside endge of the sonsole needs to be in good consdition, otherwise the plate will not snap and lock.

I beleive this is a picture of that plate: http://www.mailordercentral.com/928i...552%20283%2002

Yup, that's it! It looks so much nicer when its new. The midle par is a thin layer of foam and does degrade and strech a bit over time. Since you are in there, replace the 4 small plastic bushings in the shifter. It will decrease the sloppines of the shifter.

Yup, that's what they look like, just make sure to double check this with them over the phone.

As for the chips. I forgot to answer that question. Miney's were obvious copies. The seler said he bough them at a flea market. I took a gamble (only $75) and they worked. In fact they work so well thant I left them in there after the sueprcharger was on. They work excellent with the SC.

Just a side question..... Are you, or is it just the name that's Hungarian?
