Default Cool air BWAAAAAAH!

In Dallas we have already seen record highs but the last two days. its been in the 60's

IS it just me or do our cars run like top fuel dragsters in the cool air?

The other day I literally roasted my 11 in wide tires leaving a toll booth. I stayed in it just because that so rarely happens! PLUS its Positrac.

DO the rest of you get better performance in cool air?

A better question would be are their any combustion engines that don't?

Cool air is denser. Altitude and heat are your enemy.

So how does one super cool the air coming into the intake?

Porsche did that as best they could by putting those long tubes from air box to the front and putting a seal over the rad cowl that connects with hood when down. They have essentially sealed the grill off. Search here, some people have put insulated tubes on the OB. The GTS comes insulated, but they say that is to reduce engine noise that is funneled out the intake.

Trivia: There is an '85 on ebay now offered by a guy named Berkel who claims the engine is stock, an '85 w/315 hp, (w/several other typos like 6-speed in the "feature" section of his ad). He has removed the tubes and is sucking air from probably the hottest areas of the engine as it collects directly above the exhaust manifold. It is also a "user ID private" listing, no surprise there. If the price remains low, it might be a good buy, but I would assume you are going through a BS membrane and examine it carefully.

As the temperature drops the engine makes more power, and the tires also have less traction. Combine those two effects and it can make the difference seem pretty dramatic.

IIRC, wasn't there some dyno charts that shown that there was more power without the intake tubing vs. with intake tubing.

If that were true, keep in mind most dyno's are run with the hood open. Shut the hood, run the car for 10 minutes, then try. Sucking in hot air will lower hp.

I'm going to make a snorkle for my track car, kind of like what jeeps use to forge through rivers. Since air is cooler higher up, this should add at least 30hp.

its a bit grainy but the illumiated temp guage on the right is what you need to watch. This is a K-type thermocouople. very quick and accurate to respond.
Its been a while but i think this was like a 60-120ish mph run last summer.
I actaully have to get a nicer tank made and get it all hooked up again before it gets tooo hot...high 90s next week!

I have some other vids on there as well including my last drag run as well
