I want to see pics of her car. I can't believe that a 928 could take that much damage and allow the person that hit it to drive away. This is exactly why I don't go out on St. Patrick's day, imagine if you'd been in the car.

there is nothing wrng with the story thanks for the cncern. The cop at the front desk made me a photo copy of the police report. It had all her information listed. So I went home and looked up her address on mapquest. They do not put women dui drivers or first time offenders in jail overnight because of overcrowding in the city lockup. I am not sure if you are familiar with Cincinnati ( the riots) but we have some serious crime problems. Oh by the way if you could not tell I live in the ghetto. I am a realastate developer and have lived in this area for a long time. The sad thing is almost a year ago my cherokee was hit by a dui also. that driver totaled my car and the car in front of me. Thanks for the concern once again about how the story sounds!
Oh yeah on the bottom of your post

Germans have no word for musclecar. Just not in their vocabulary. My wife is german.

Sorry for your loss.
In today's global environment, just about anything goes in language. If one were to say musclecar in German, it would be thus. My ex-wife is from the Eifel.
These really aren't "sharks" either.

Had this happen to several members of the BMW E30 board recently (Accidents with or without DUI). Many of them made out very well after the final settlement. As was pointed out, the first offer will likely be low wholesale on a car in poor/fair shape.
I would start NOW finding cars of similar years (yours is an 86.5, so I would lean towards that or 87s), and start collecting ads on the highest dollar ones I can find. Preferably from reputable (or at least the kind of guys that have 'glossy' web pages, or ebay ads) sellers.
The key here is to fight the DUI chicks insurance company with facts/figures. Their figures are going to be on beater, daily drivers. Yours need to be on pristine show cars. A 928 is a collectable car..not a 1986 Chebby Cavalier. There is a lot of variability in pricing in any year.
Just by renting a $500/week "Specialty Sports" type car...A quick Travelocity search says Jaguar S type matches, you are costing them $2000 a month, $24,000 a YEAR. As mentioned above, they will be very likely to settle for $$$ more if you make it known that you will fight their offer, or be happy to wait until the parts are imported from Germany to make the car complete and whole again.

Dear all,
This is the WIFE (yes, I stole his password). I just wanted to tell you guys how sweet you are! My husband was so broken hearted this morning. So was I when I took the pictures he posted. John Struthers’ comment seems rather appropriate: the lady was lucky. She only made it some blocks down the road. My first question was too, if she was alright. She lost her grill with the Toyota sign, we wanted to save it for the insurance, but when we came back out, it got stolen from the street. We just didn’t have the best luck lately, so I’m glad that you all are putting a real effort into helping my husband. Thank you for that.
I’m just glad he wasn’t in the car when the lady hit him!
Please take good care of your cars and German wives ;.)

The Excellence market survey states that 86's are worth between $8015 and 12200...which is a increase from $7638 and 11625 in Dec 2004! Get a copy of the magazine (#143) and use that to help establish the value of your 928 to her insurance!

This looks quite shocking - glad they caught the person who did it.
With that toe-out you should never again experience oversteer in a right turn...
Hopefully you can get the insurance to pay you quick and enough to buy a good replacement. Consider buying back the car and selling the parts to pay for an upgrade.

Think about it...if you can replace the car for the insurance money with a similar car, have a bit left over--the salvage on cars is pitiful ($200-500 for most). I would bet you could find a nice 86.5 with a blown engine easy and cheaply enough, then have a nice project to transplant your engine into it. Wind up with 2 of them......

A Sable or a Taurus huh?
When a Drunken Superior Court judge totaled my 2 week old 911-E and the insurance company refused to total the car and give me another new one, I threatened to rent a Mercedes 450 SL (there was no P car dealer in that town at the time) until they made up their mind. In about 48 hours I had a check for a new 911E on my desk. I didn't want the salvage 911, as it had a Lincoln driven up the back of it big time. What a mess. I have tried being accomodating to insurance companies. **** !! PURE **** !!!

Very few people get the insurance company to pay for more than a Sable or a Taurus.

I am really sorry to see your loss. 86.5 are pretty rare cars and are pretty awesome. Only last week did i get my car back from the shop only to have an idiot driving an 87 Nissan Pathfinder reverse into my car, climb into the hood, damage the bumper, hood and fender. Not a pretty site. He also tried to flee but the neiborghs saw him and knocked on the door. Called the Police reporting a hit and run... by the time they got there, the neiborgh where he was visiting called him and he returned. The bastard was sooo apologetic and acting like ahh aahhh ahhh sorry my ***. Now he is telling the insurance that he does not think he did the damages. Well... we will see, i am gonna show him damages.
Anyways, please have NO TOLERANCE or feel bad for those bastards specially hit and runs, and DUIs... I have ZERO tolerance for this BS and those people should be in jail PERIOD. I know it hurts to lose a 928 specially if you're in love with it. Hold on and God will watch over you

Did I say I work with this "stuff" every day? Did I say I know it all? Sounds like you are of the opinion that you know it all. Why not let another opinion be considered Mr. Tough Guy? If it works it works. Sorry to shock your ***, but it worked for me. And if this poor unfortunate guy who did nothing but leave his car parked legally on the street can see justice by getting a lawyer to help him shift through the **** and crap the insurance company will throw it him, what's it to your ***? You would rather he "mitigate" his damages to preserve some punk *** insurance crooks who would rather intimidate him? You think he doesn't have the right to be made whole? They insured a drunk. If that drunk had killed your kid, you think the insurance company should tell you to mitigate your losses? Yeah, you probably do. Poor girl. Probably was just an honest mistake, her getting into that car and being drunk. It has happened to me twice Mr. Know It All. Two alcoholics have already came close to killing me on two separate occasions and the cops told me the same thing both times: the judges just keep letting them out, and the insurance companies keep insuring them. You got no friends in my house fella. Both of my accidents could have been prevented easily if someone in the insurance industry had had the guts to pressure the legislature to stop letting them back out to do it again. And all this guy wants is a comparable ride until his car is made whole again. Don't come at me with your insurance industry crap, because I'll throw so much factual matter about drunks and driving at you, you won't believe it. Part of my admittedly "limited" knowledge has come from my very few years alive on this planet.....why, I'm only a young kid. But some of it comes directly from one of the most respected insurance adusters in the Bay Area, and a well known Porsche enthusiast who has tutored me on this specific matter: the rental car. And in this specific type of circumstance. Affar is right: she is charged with a crime, and in my case the guy that almost killed me and my passenger was a Superior Court freaking judge !! A freaking alcoholic judge. But forgive me, Mr. Experience, because you have obviously been alive and in this game so much longer than I have. ****. PURE ****. You're blocked.

If you can...
Get Haggerty's or other specialty -antique/exotic - insurance- . You might have to gate and cover a section of a side alley to qualify as a garage kept auto owner but it's worth the expense.
Full coverage, agreed value (payout) depending on miles per year can be ridiculously cheap
and gives you replacement value peace of mind.
Does nothing what-so- ever for your state of mind when your baby bites the dust..
still, it does help overall.
