Seven New 928 Engines still in crates in Germany
In a recent conversation with my Porsche Parts Dept, I took a whim and
asked if there were any new or factory remanufactured engines for the 928 still in existence.
I was surprised to learn that Porsche has 7 remanufactured 928 engines in stock in Germany.
They are all model M28.43 - 1985
A remanufactured engine from Porsche includes short block W/fitted crankshaft, fitted pistons and rings, oil pump & oil pan
Porsche wants $8,239.96 ea. I think they could be had for about $7600.
I have them researching the freight to get them here, don't know what that is yet.
I actually do not want any, and I already told Mark at 928 Intl about them too in case he wanted to bring them in.
The '85 32 v motor was a queer bird, and that's exactly why these are the only 928 engines left on the shelf in Stuttgart. No body wants them beacause of their unique piston dome.
But heck - swap out the pistons to whatever you need and you have a new motor! Let me or Mark A know if you have any interest.
Just wanted you Rennlister's to know that 7 new engines still exist...

its a steel. heck ,the gt cams (same as 85 cams) cost $2000, give better performance, and you get a new engine for $5k, and then, i would get S4 heads and mount them instead and have a 11:1 85 with the S4 big valves. the pistons really have a lack of "dome". thats why the compression would be higher. just have that one cam modified so it fits the S4 heads and your off.
No one has done this, but I hope someone does soon!
or you can just go rebuild, but if you have someone do it, it will probably cost $10,000

Some people on this list will probably consider it a crime to even consider putting these pristine engines into a car and actually use them for their intended purpose... might be collectable someday! Please! rebuild your own or adopt a used orphan lump but do not commit the blasphemy of running one of these precious engineering marvels into the ground!!!

there was an 88 911 CS with 80 miles and a 79 924 Sebring with (gulp) 30 miles!

The lobes themselves are the same, but the lobe separation is greater with the 85/86's, with the intake being advanced 8 degrees. As a result, there's less overlap which implies less cylinder scavenging work done by the exhaust. However, since the intake is open longer later during the compression stroke, there is more time to fill the cylinders at high RPM, thus the ability to produce more power at higher RPM. On the other hand, low-end power production will suffer somewhat, which may or may-not be a concern depending upon the application.

Three Wheelin'
If you read Carl's post closely I don't think the heads are included. It appeats to be just a shortblock.
