supercharged shark top speed
Say you needed to get somewhere fast, really fast. Has anyone actually found out what the top speed is for any of the supercharged 928 S4's? I am talking about the cars that still have full interiors without a lot of other one off custom mods. I was always curious about this, but never really saw anyone post about it before. Joe.

The problem is the gearing...
But if that is addressed, it would probably be just over 200mph...
The Devek car hit that with less horsepower than some of these cars are running...

We could find out this year. I'm going to help George Suennen install a 2.20 tranny in his 90 S4 soon so he can shoot for 200+ possibly this year. He has a Murph kit that dynoed 437 RWHP. I think George has calculated that should put him at 210+ with the new gear ratio. I believe he has been to 180 with his current 2.54 rear end. George's car is still street legal and has all the original equipment except the rear seat. I've only approached 170 as my car is not safety equipped to go any faster. I would need to install a full roll cage, fire suppression system and fuel cell. I doubt I will do that. I can tell you 170 is easy in these cars. Anders, my navigator, looked over at me when we were cruising along and said that it seemed kind of slow. We had the AC on and were quite comfortable. My car is about as stock as they get except for the SC. I had RPMs and power to spare but could not use it under the rules. Prior to the SC my car topped out power-wise at 165 on level ground at 6000 feet above sea level (would not reach redline). Not sure what the top speed is, but I figure mid-high 170s before I run out of RPM. Not bad for a 17 year old car with 160K miles and a rather modest SC kit.

I have driven a '90 GT on the autobahn many times and it would go slightly over 300 KMH (186.42) on the tach. But I think the tach with standard tires shows somewhat of 5% to 10% too high at that speed.

Weight has little to do with top speed only how quickly you get there. Things like removing the mirrors, taping the seams, blocking part of the grill ,lowering the front end ,adding an air dam, running flat narow wheels ,closing the windows ! ....do ...

If you look closly at the 1986 top speed run at Bonneville
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...&q=porsche+928
You will see that the mirrors are removed and the car is quite a bit lower than normal ride height...but almost 172 at that elevation is quite good....the same car hit over 180 at Nardo at much lower elevations
Almost any S/C car has far more power than any stock 928 did.....granted GT's & 89+ autos are gearing limited to about 180 or so....any 2.20 928 should be able to get around 200 with the right tires/wheels....this is the same combo Devek used back in 99 to reach 210! I would guess that BillB's could easily hit redline in top gear for about 185 or so & like he said it is full weight, daily driver 928..not a stripped out track car..Sometime in the not so distant future, a 928 will break Deveks record...probably a boosted 928...but maybe just a convential monster motor?

You can change the "gearing " by simply mounting taller tires on the rear. At Bonneville the surface is salt and traction ,slip becomes an issue , think of driving very fast on a gravel road.
