Don't listen to Heinrich, the 928 is worth keeping, the cats are fine as empty chambers. There are a LOT of owners that are running cat-less and still pass smog. They are scrubbers FWIW. OK, maybe but generally speaking the car should pass w/out them. O2, vacume lines, build-up and other various leaks is my call.

Let us know how things turn out.

My $0.02, after a long day (discount net value by 50%), if you have a one or three cruddy injectors with a bad spray pattern those cylinders will lean. The O2 sensor will sense the lean and increase fuel to all cylinders. The 'good' injectors will then run rich, the 'bad' cylinders will still be lean. Run a load or two of techron through. Also, have your injectors ever been cleaned and balanced?

Summary: clean the fuel system first. $20 for two bottles of techron. Then look for more expensive problems.

Worf: My injectors have never been cleaned and balanced, but they only have 45,000 miles on 'em. I'll try the techron.

Michael: I'll replace the O2 sensor, blow the carbon out and go through it again for vacuum leaks.

Heinrich: I would give it away, but I don't know anyone who would take it off my hands. Any suggestions?

WICruiser: I suspect that I may have trashed my cats, but that was over a year ago and I did much better on the emissions test last year than either this year or two years ago.

MBMB, you know a college student who is always willing to accept free 928 stuff...

You forget, I've seen your car. I like....

I bet I can make it pass emissions, even if I have to move to west Texas to do it!

That said, with a werid results like your getting, my money is on one or two of the cylinders not behaveing like the other 6 or 7. That means ignition components, and fuel injectors. So, inspect the plugs, and try the techron out.

Only 45K? Then the car has sat for long enough periods for crud to build up. Run some stuff through it -- some say Techron, some say Berryman's -- whatever, give that a shot.

Like Sharkskin said, it's not about the miles.

It is about heat cycles and time between cycles. The shorter the driving periods the faster the injectors will varnish. If you do not drive regularly, using fuel stabilizer will help keep the varnish away.

I had the injectors on my '91 cleaned at 8 years and ~35k miles. It made a BIG assometer difference.

And on that subject, can we just decide that assometer is a real word and lobby to get it in the Oxford?

Okay okay okay. Thanks, all. I had half a tank of gas. For the last four months we've been in the middle of the garage expansion project (aallllllmmmmoooooossssssttttttt done), so she's been sitting neglected, and there's no telling how long ago that half-tank was put in. So I added a bottle of Techron and sloshed it around, then topped off and took off for Galveston (about 120 miles round-trip), running at freeway speeed in 3rd and 4th gear. I'll burn through this tank, down to almost empty, then add another bottle of Techron and go through half that tank before going back for a free retest.

IIRC a bottle of Techron is for 12 gallons. Run a bottle with only 1/2-2/3 tank. Also I've read that fuel additives like Techron can mess with emissions inspections (probably a myth), so you may want to go back to a tank of plain gas before your next inspection.

PS: I heard unobtanium and assometer long before Rennlist existed.

I think "Unobtanium" can be credited to Mark Donahue in regards to the Penske Trans Am Camaro he was driving at the time. Somebody asked him why it was so light and fast I believe...

"Your search - assometer etymology - did not match any documents. " Worth a try, though. I'm amazed that unobtainium dates to the 60s -- that's what the engineering geeks were using to clean the monitors on their Sun workstations when I was at Rice in the late 80s.

The bottle of Techron I got said it was good for up to 20 gallons.

After further reflection, and additional information I would agree that a few varnished injectors makes a lot of sense, providing both the lean cylinders required to develop the NOx and the rest of the cylinders running rich to get the O2 sensor happy making them high in HC. Besides running s few tanks of fuel with injector cleaner through is a lot more fun than any option I can think of to clean it up.
