Angry Mirror Mirror on the ...(side mirror control)

Just replaced a broken connector on the door mirror directional switch (86.5 S) You know the 5 pin connector that plugs into the directional ****. Now both driver side and passenger side mirrors work....but only in two directions. The drivers side goes down and to one side and the passenger mirror goes up and the the other side. I suspect it's a blown relay but in one of the non-working directions I can hear the relay click. Any ideas guys will be appreciated as always.

Perhaps its the mirror itself. my driver side mirror only went one direction, upon pulling the mirror out I discovered one of the ball and socket joints were disconnected so the motor would turn but the mirror would not.

I was tinkering with my mirrors a few months ago in my never ending quest to restore my 80 euro, here's what I know. The mirror has one motor and one solenoid in it. When you put voltage through the motor it will move sideways. When you reverse the voltage it will move sideways in the other direction. If you energize the solenoid and then put voltage through the motor it will move vertically. Energize the solenoid and reverse the voltage it will move vertically in the opposite direction. So it sounds like the your switch isn't allowing you to reverse the voltage. You have power to the motor in one direction (sideways) and power to the motor in the same direction with power to the solenoid (one vertical direction). It's definitely the switch or the connector. Go over it with a multimeter and you should find it.

hmmmmm...is there a relay that is supposed to reverse the voltage or could the wires at the switch be flipped so that in the opposite direction the polarity remains the same?

Jeez...I'm lucky. Both my mirrors work in all 4 directions...and the rear hatch release works every time from both pull switches. Now..if I could just get my half the time it works...half the time it doesn't, cruise control sorted..I'd be one of the lucky ones with a 20 year old daily driver that has no electrical gremlins. A lofty goal indeed.

From what I know (and I did this one afternoon almost a year ago) the whole thing is done by the little 4-way switch. I took mine apart (I don't advise this at all because it's riveted closed and has to be glued back together) and I'm pretty sure the 5 wires are 1-power to the motor, 2-ground from the motor, 3-power to the solenoid, 4-ground from the solenoid, and 5-power to the crossover switch. I'm pretty sure the motor wires are black and green. Send a current through them and see if it moves and then reverse the current and see if it goes the other way. If all the wires are good, and I'm pretty sure they'd have to be or else the mirrors wouldn't work at all, then the problem may just be dirty contacts. I really don't know hoe to clean something you can't open but I'd try spraying a little WD-40 into it either through the seams or through the top then play with it for a while. WD-40 is a dielectric so it won't short anything and it may loosen up whatever dirt is in there if that is what the problem is.

Thanks guys...will try. Jeff...can I borrow your mirror directional switch..hehehehe. BTW don't bother to get your cruise control working. It's the computer which will cost $5500 and is guaranteed to break again. The PO replaced his twice and it doesn't work now! I never use cruise control soooooo.

both of my mirrors work, but the switch seems to be wired wrong. When you push it right, the mirrors go left, up means down...its like bizzarro world. THANK YOU, PO!

Brian....your's is easy...someone put the harness plug on the switch "backwards"...Turn the plug around...put it back on the switch, and "you got it" .

Shoot man..don't "borrow mine"...BUY a switch from 928 Intl...or Specialists...or Pelican (you get my drift)...Its NOT an expensive part, and "problem solved" ! Plus, it'll be a new part...not another 20 year old job waiting a few more days to do the same thing.

You're right but I've chased that dragon before. Need to make sure it's the switch first or else i'll end up buying the house at 928 Intl trying to find the thing that works.

Hi beofore chasing your tail open up the mirrors gently pry the mirror off of its mount if you have the push in kind, remove the heater wires ,then remove the 3 screws that hold in the mirror motor assy, remove the harness plug and look very carefully at the wire sockets do they seem to clean from corosion? are they fully seated when the connectors are put together? I belive the white wire is the solenoid swiching wire, Stan

The white and brown are to the solenoid. But if the wires weren't good the mirror wouldn't work at all. I mean the motor does move in one direction so it has to have the complete circuit. If you do take your mirrors apart you should use a power probe or a test light to run some current through the motor wires

Thanks, Jeff. I'm planning to open the door up soon. I'm trying to get my hands on some dynamat to do the door panels. I can fix the mirrors and replace some door panel clips while I'm in there...
