I cannot, no matter how hard I try get the locking nut off of the tensioner, hands are covered in blood and grease and I have school in 5 hours. I will get this car back together for school!

Note that when turning the engine, you must turn it to TDC #1 cylinder. This is the point at which the cam gears line up with the marks. If you pass this point, you have to rotate the crank TWO FULL TURNS(720°) to get back to TDC for your next measurement.

Ross:

There is not a lot of room to work in there and get the leverage you need. It is best to slip a box end over the nut put your weight into it. It's sturdy enough that I would not be hesitant to honk on it.

Ross - everyone here has likely done one better at some time or other ( except me ... ) Well, there was this time ..... nah, save that one from the public eye ...

On the S4, if your air pump is still on, access to the locknut really is a PITA. Get a 17mm 'shorty' wrench, or cut down a cheapo and wrap your hands in leather gloves to bo the brute force thing - the rest is like delicate surgery ...

BTW - what did the Kempf tool register on the PS belt? ...

You probably know this already Ross, but if you, while turning the crankshaft in order to line up the timing marks inadvertently pass them....don't try turning the crankshaft backward!! You have to take it around again...twice.

Best of luck!

Ross:

That is still hilarious. Hey, but that's nothing. I spent a month driving everybody here crazy with my electrical mystery (fuses blowing, lights all flashing incorrectly) after I convinced myself that the PO had put the wrong type of bulb in the front turn signals and proceded to short the system with the wrong bulb myself and did not recognize it. I had Alan, Wally, Jim, Garth, Heinrich doing mental gymnastics trying to explain how one ground or another or switch must be screwed up. Also, my very first tech question when I got my 928 was, "Where is the lug nut wrench stored in the car?" I had taken it out and couldn't remember where it went. That's lame.

So, you've got nothing on me, BUT I have to add - make sure you are turning the nut in the correct direction. You should be pulling the wrench UP or pushing it UP from underneath. Because of the MY87+ fan shroud, you will probably need a shorty, as mentioned.

I used a wrench out of a Honda motorcycle tool kit..............not the best quality of wrenches but short enough to get the job done.

We should start another thread on goofs..............PS tensioner now thats funny..............and Garth, didn't realise the multi-use of the Kemp tool did ya?............almost choked on my morning coffee

If the belly pans are off, safely support the car and catch the end of the short 17mm wrench in the open end of a long wrench ( say, a 19mm): with upwards tension when on the locknut, smack the bottom end with a hammer. The nut will yield! A foot long piece of pipe may be better - but you get the idea ... Watch out for the rad
