I can't recall exactly what they said, but I think it had something to do with difficulty overcoming pre-load that may be at the flexplate, giving a falsely low endplay number.
Maybe my measure is false, but it looks awfully good . I just clamped a dial indicator to the bellhousing and zeroed it with rearward pressure on the harmonic dampener ( front pulley actually). Then from beneath, push the flywheel assembly forward .... the difference being end float. It takes modest effort to "flex" the flexplate over this small range - for the prop shaft and rear flex plate also are attached for the ride. In any event, I felt a solid 'thunk' which I believed to be the crank kissing the thrust bearing, indicating the range of movement.

Good idea, cutting the bolts Garth! Lucky for me, I can drop the lower bellhousing without any interference from the exhaust, even luckier I have a clutch to relieve TT pressure. But if I had a car at risk of TBF I would probably use your idea and take it one step lazier, with either a Sawzall or Dremel(or other) cutoff wheel.

Hey, I'm all for lazy , but guess I'm gonna hafta take a pic of the area ... the sawzall thing fleetingly crossed my mind, as did the image of Tim Allan in 'Tool Time': Really, no rotary tool could access the area, and it's a tight squeeze with a hacksaw blade.
I'm starting to think that you may need an automatic in your life (too) - it may bring out that more subtle, other gender side ... as the sawzall is left on the bench

Garth, keep truckin'. Good work. Your comments are much appreciated. I think it's important to the 928 community to identify a relatively reasonable diagnostic for TBF. Thanks.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so here is one of a single blade holder chewing away at the right rear bolt: there is not a lot of room .... but where on a 928 is there?

..Hey Sharkskin: Dave, the second pic is for you .... the worlds smallest sawzall resting in its charger. OK, so I cheated ....

Garth has spare 928 parts scattered all around the workbench like most people have nuts and bolts.

OK, I see how tight it is in there now... and why only the "special" dental sawzall will work.

I like the other "stuff" Garth has scattered around his workbench.

Dave, I'm sure Garth just bought it for the 928 article.
