Anyone Re-Wrap Steering Wheels?

I restitched mine....while it was still in the car! Actually, I only had to do the upper half of the 3 spoke wheel. Not too bad once you get the hang of it. I used 2 needles at once, followed the original pattern. Kinda frustrating, your fingertips will hurt, but the thread has held fine for 12 years now.

You are likely better off to re-stitch the entire wheel: use a polypropylene type thread or equivalent that is UV resistant, and the two needle technique is also the one that worked best for me. Shots of in progress and finished wheel from my '88...... go slowly, and use the 'hook' tool to retension every 2-3".

I just did mine, but the regular thread looks bad so I want to re-stitch it with something better.
Garth, where did you get the polypropylene type thread? I was looking at the round, leather thread at .5mm since it won't fray, but I'm not sure it will hold up over time.

I got my thread from the sewing/fabric store. I simply asked one of the girls and she turned me on to all kind of tricks and knew just what kind of thread to use.

John,
I went to a shop that does canvas awnings and similar things that take a lot of weather and UV exposure: If I hadn't lucked out there, I would go to a horsey Tack shop and/or find someone who does saddlery.
If I can find the product tag, I'll drop a PM - BTW, most threads claim to be UV resistant .... but if you get one that can survive horse poop and sweat, it otta do a steering wheel.
