Camshaft Removal from Housing
Can someone describe how to remove this. I can push the camshaft about .5" before it hits one of the bearings. I am just not getting it and I'm very frustrated.
I am also pi$$ed becaus the PO stated that he had put in Performance CAMS and pistons.....ummm yeah right...I just xreferenced the part#s.... :
If you ever run across this guy on ebay 'CLITES' aka Gary from New Age Motion out of Kingston, PA --- RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the cam tower still attached to the head? If so you must remove the cam tower first (the part that says "PORSCHE" across the top" The cam is inside this housing, will not pull out unless its off the head. The tension from the valve springs pushing on the lifters will not allow the cam to come out.
It's a bitch to remove all the allen bolts holding the cam tower on, but it can be done. I finished mine about a month ago.

Hacker---9999 posts!!!! Sweet---
Richard, that's what I missing---the lifter sleeves...Ok, I tagged and bagged the lifter/sleeves.
It seems that the natural flow to remove the camshaft is out the front (i.e. sprocket side). However, I get a bout 1/4 of the way out and it gets 'stuck'. I obviously don't want to force it, but I can't see what's holding it up now either that I have the sleeves out. HELP?!?!?
thx...

Try the 'back door' - as mentioned in my note, some cams have stepped journal diameters: I can't recall if the 16v is of this type, but if so, it only comes out in one direction.

Wierd, my 79 camshaft came right out. Kinda tight, but it worked. Same thing with the 84 Euro camshaft. However, I do have a set of 1980 camtowers, and for some reason the camshaft will not come out. Seems to come out until the first journal, then hangs up. Sounds kinda like what you are experiencing?

Rich, that's exactly what I'm experiencing. It seems so tight it feels like I'm either going the wrong way or something is wrong. I'm afraid to put to much pressure in the event I break something...

Hey everyone, just wanted to update on this one:
The CAM was tapered and had to go out the end that is closest to the firewall or NON-Sprocket side. It took a few 'gentle' taps of the deadblow but came right out after the first bearing got through. Brett Rickman, a fellow 928er, came over and showed me the way!!
Regards,
Brad
