Default Looking for 928 book recommendations

Hey Y'all,

With the car stored for the winter, away from home where I can't even tinker with it, I've got the jones coming down. Bad.

I received for Christmas a book called The Gold Plated Porsche:How I Sank a Small Fortune into a Used Car, and Other Misadventures by Stephan Wilkinson.

It's a good read, with lots of fun anecdotes, about the restoration of a 911. He has good things to say about the 928, but the car only came up a couple of times. Needless to say, it didn't satisfy my yearning.

I've heard of Projekt 928, but are there any other books out there that are more specific to the car we love?

Oh yeah, I also just finished Porsche High Performance Driving Handbook by Vic Elford. Not worth much, if you ask me, because even though the guy is a very accomplished, World Champion driver, most of the content serves to glorify him rather than illuminate the nuances of high-performance driving. Oh well.

I think the Elford book is a must-have. Projekt 928 is also in English, I have a copy. And I highly recommend Porsche: Excellence Was Expected (2005 I think)

Project 928 was available in both English and German. The English versions go for about $300 these days on ebay. There are lots of pictures of the development of the 928. It's a historic documentation of how the 928 came to be.

Then there is the Porsche 928 Technische Dokumentation - a detailed bood by retired Porsche engineer Jörg Austen. It breaks up the 928 history by model year and has lots of pictures, diagrams and drawings, some of which were never published anywhere else. It also has technical specs for each model year, broken down by US, Japan or Australia, and Rest of World (Euro, etc). This book is only available in German, and there are no plans to publish it in English. However, it is clearly the best 928-book I've seen since Project 928. And the diagrams as well as technical data are pretty much universal to understand.

Then there is a variety of other books - The Gold portfolio with tests and articles on the 928 in British and American magazines, and David Hemming's Porsche 928 Buyers Guide.

Lastly, I will make an announcement about a new British 928 book as soon as I find the time to take pictures and put together a group buy. That one even features a few of us rennlisters here...

Feel free to browse my store at www.hookedoncars.com under Porsche > 928 > Books-Models-Keychains-Pins-etc.

H.. that's right - Excellence Was Expected, 2nd edition.
(3 volumes) (on my shelf)

Also, (auf deutsch) PORSCHE 928, by J. Austen

And, there's always "...Bosch Fuel Injection", B.Watson

Good reading.

G'luck.

I got a book at Sharks in the Park last year. It is called 982 takes on the competition. It compares the various MY 928's to sports cars of the same year. Pretty interesting stuff if y ou can get a copy.

I think that one is temporarily unavailable - at least last time I tried to order them they were not available. But someone might have them in stock. Ask Susan at DEVEK, if she has any of them left!

Thanks for the recommendations and clarifications, everyone.

Nicole, thanks for the link. I can't believe I've never browsed your biz before! (That sounds dirty, doesn't it?! But y'all know what I mean!)

I have a book published by Road and Track that is a compilation of all articles and road tests for all 928 models, from 1978 to 1995. It's a good reference for how the models change from year-to-year.

Chaad-

I recently received the Projekt928 in German. For some reason, it's all jibberish to me? But the pictures are pretty cool. You're welcome to borrow it (after next Thursday) if you promise to use a drool cup.

You could get the 928 tech info CD set from Jim Morehouse - there is enough reading there to keep you off the street and out of trouble until Spring! The changes by year alone is the equivalent of a large book...

Jim's email is jim928ATptd.net - change the AT to @
