Default Driving Story

Disclaimer: the following events are purely "fictional and for entertainment purposes only" (unless you drive a Cobra )

Had some decent weather here before Christmas, and got to take the shark to work a couple of days last week. Much more fun than the van!

The car is running great, especially after repacing the o-ring in the blow off valve. Full boost is back! Dusted a poor turbo 1.8 VW that after taking a look just wanted to tailgate. Fourth 80 to 140ish left the poor gut nowhere to be seen -- damn does this car pull at speed!

Now the fun part. On the way home friday night, on an open stretch of straight normally unpatrolled highway up came a Mustang Cobra (supercharged) with a killer loud exhaust. He stayed in the left lane with me in the middle lane. The Cobra downshifted and gave a little jump. I dropped down to third at 70ish-plenty of boost and some revs before the next shift. He jumped just before me, but his advantage was soon to disappear. By the top of third, I had my nose at his front wheel. Perfect shift to fourth and it was walk on by time. I shut it down by the 4-5 shift and was ahead by a few car lengths (hard to be exact at night). I slowed back down with a killer adrenaline rush and a couple of taps on the horn from the Cobra guy as he rolled on by wondering what the hell just killed him.

No one hurt, no tickets, and another notch in the belt. Any form of street racing is bad........but it is tough to run with a boosted shark at speed. This car puts a smile on my face every time I go for a ride. There may be new cars as fast or faster, but they are far and few between. I guess I don't need to bug Murf for that smaller SC pulley quite yet.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season as much as me this year!

Jim R

Tino -

I don't think Randy approved of my original thread title so he changed it?

Brian -

Thanks, it was fun. Last dyno on a Dastech brake dyno (not inertial like dynojet) was 551rwhp uncorrected on a 75 degree day in fourth gear. We spun the tires badly in 3rd, and still had wheelspin in fourth. 8+psi intercooled, stock cats/exhaust with a RMB. I will get around to a dynojet shop one of these days.

Heinrich-

Get yourself some boost in that beast your just got on the road!

Hi Gretch,

Heart warming indeed!

On the BOV o-ring, I had been making less peak boost, and also waiting until higher in the rev range for boost. The o-ring that seals the discharge off (the "plunger") was out of the machined groove and just hanging on the rod. Cleaned and reseated, reinstalled, and all was well. Throttle response much more crisp, and instant boost starting at much lower rpms. Easy free 20 minute fix, with much earlier boost and full boost up top.

John,

I guess "kill story" is not PC. I just saw the edited footnote, no explanation. No big deal, actually may the first time I've been "editted" anywhere except at home.

Thanks Jim, I will keep an eye out for that.....G is on the lift for exhaust and sway bar upgrades and a new o2 sensor....then the "kit" is gonna get a complete inspection down to checking the timing belt tension. At that point I will also remove the air pump, so it will be a good time to look at the blow off valve.....any guess as to why the o ring moved?

ps, first weekend in June SITM....you have to do this trip......

Nice story. We don't get enough of these on here. How does a supercharger set-up change exhaust note if the same exhaust sytem is on before and after install?

SITM is currently on the calender.

Re: the o-ring, it sits in a shallow groove with some good surface area sitting above the groove to seal the valve under boost. All that air blowing by with the valve open and possibly poorly seated in the groove from the factory. If it happens again, I'll try a drop or two of gasket adhesive to hold it. I think it will be fine as it is though.

Car is definitely louder underhood at wot and things happen very quickly.

I have to rig up my camcorder in the car-burns to dvd with 5.1 surround sound. I'll try to get a good rip through the gears with surround sound.
