[QUOTE=Adrian]The All-aluminium V8 was an American invention (the V8 itself being credited to the Americans as well in 1915 with the first running examples made circa 1923).

Sorry, the first mass-produced V8 engine has to be credited to the French in 1910 by de Dion-Bouton (at that time, the largest automobile manufacturer in the world). And they were already running in cars that year. Until Henry came around, the US was pretty backwards when it came to automotive technology.

Dan,
I stand corrected. See I have learned something today. As somebody else said one cannot believe all they read. I have always believed Cadillac invented the V8, but it was really the French. Funny when you think about because parts of the Cayenne V8 are manufactured in France.
Ciao,
Adrian.

I agree. I very much enjoyed reading this. Not many places can you read about a 928 and a Vega in the same place without bananas being thrown about.

You're right Mr Bailey, fun thread! Here's my tidbit to add:

Actually, I rode around Moscow in a test vehicle fitted with a catalytic converter in 1969. Certainly not production, though.

Well, the original "catalytic converter" was designed back in the 50s (US patent filed in 56).
