I was a technician in a Porsche dealership and all we ever saw were 911s with some 944/968 the 928 was a rare site and the other techs...(Old crankie farts)...said "If it isn't air cooled it's not a Porsche" So I got to work on all the water cooled Porsches. A black GTS came in one day and I fell in love with it. I wanted one from that day forward, I don't have a GTS....yet....but the early cars are a good fix until then.

I was originaly looking for a "Bimmer shark" or a Jag xj6 S1 (pre 928 dream car) may buy one in the future, real sexy car. Was checking the Trader etc when one day I saw the name Porsche with an incredibly low price, I took a closer look at that Porsche and it was the 928. I could not believe my eye, at last a "soupercar" for the price of a run of the mill daly.
Did some investigation here and elsewhere on this beauty and came to the conclusion that the 928 was THE car to have. More fuel efficiant than BM6 and XJ6 and virtualy rust proof so all the money goes toward mecanicals...so I forgot about the other cars, the hunt was on. Ten month later, I had one.

Was looking for a 911 Turbo and left the showroom at Parcars sorely dissappointed that I simply did not fit well in the car. Tried a blue/blue 928, didn't care for it. Went and looked at some other stuff, then came back three days later. Drove it again and said what the hell, I'll try it. That was that.

Well, first of all you have to understand I was actually alive in '78.

I was a struggling young doctor doing my residency training at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. My wife and I were so poor at the time that our "dates" consisted in visiting car dealerships and trying to finagle test drives from the salesmen under the pretext of actually being interested in buying a car! (Got to drive a lot of pretty cool cars that way.)

You also have to remember what cars looked like back in '78. Foreign cars were not real common then. And American cars were square, boxy, creased, and had "fat lip" bumpers, fake spoke wheels, fake "Landau" roofs (Remember those?), chrome everywhere, fake "Continental Kits" on the rear bumper, and white side wall tires - some with groovy gold stripes too!

So one night we walked into the Phoenix Porsche dealership, and there in all it's sensuous, curvaceous, low V8 rumbling gorgeouness, was the first 928 I had ever seen! It was a jaw-dropping experience! I was dumbstruck. Never in all my life - before or since - had I experienced such a breathtaking feeling when seeing a new car for the first time.

It was a while before I could afford one. But you know what they say... You never forget your first time!

I had owned several P cars, including 356 and 911 models, having lusted after them since high school when a friend who raced a Porsche Speedster turned my "hot rod" mind around to the correct orientation. I also had (still have) an original (well, a little warmed over) 914/6. What a fun car. Constant grins. And I could fit all the camping equipment I needed for a week at the races in that car. Then it got rear ended and I suffered some severe knee injuries as a result. Surgeon said no more stick shift cars with clutch pedals, because the knee wouldn't take it.

So I called a friend who just happened to own a Porsche dealership. He had always driven 911S and 911 Turbo models. I asked him what he was driving those days, since he had a choice of anything on the lot or from the factory. He said he drove a 928GTS. I laughed and made some wise *** remark about the validity of it as a P car. He didn't laugh. I began to get more serious, as he scolded me and advised me to drive one and then try to repeat my remarks. So I did. I haven't repeated my remarks. I drove an '84 which changed my mind. I took it to his dealership to have him look it over. He advised me against that car, but I kept looking. (I had an automatic Rabbit to drive so I wasn't in that much rush). I found Devek and considered some 16 V 928s because of price before I finally drove a 32V car. That was it. I had to have a 32V model. Finally I settled on my '86.5 automatic and think I like it more than any other model except maybe a GTS. But I don't like the rear flares on the GTS model.

Now even the lust for a 993, which I regard as one of the best to ever be produced by Porsche, is waning. 911s are too narrow and cramped compared to the comfort and ergonomics of the 928. And my 928 swallows up all of my camping equipment and a week's supply of food with room to spare. Finally, there is no forgiveness in a 911 for some specific driving errors, while a 928 simply tucks its tail back under your butt and keeps on rolling where you point it
if you do the same thing in it.

I will probably keep my 928 forever. Now all I need for my 914/6 is a paddle shifter sequential gearbox, and I'll keep it forever.

My story is published in an upcoming new book on the 928. The book also includes an article on other female 928 owners. Watch for an announcement here soon.

Some kind soul, knowing I played with fast cars, gave me a cut away drawing of the then new 928; I was fascinated with the complexity and clarity of design - the seed was planted. Later, on a journey of discovery of the west coast in the early '80s, we arrived in LA one Sunday AM. By accident, we stumbled onto a Porsche dealership and there in stark reality was a row of a dozen 928s - the first I'd ever seen in the flesh. The fantasy of owning one came to be a haunting thought.
In the mid '80s, I moved to Calgary for a plum opportunity: Oil prices bottomed out and all the oil patch toys were up for grabs. I found my '80 tucked away in storage - a custom ordered car with ~ 10K Km on the clock. After a test drive, it was all I had imagined it would be: It is still with me .....

I was looking for a new toy and the decision was between an 850I, a built up Jag XJS and a 928. Having driven both the 850I and the Jag on several occaisions, I had yet to drive a 928. I had done some research and had ruled out the 16 valve cars for lack of horsepower. I found an early 86' that was in pretty good shape to drive. I was unimpressed in town driving, felt sluggish and heavy handling. As soon as I hit the on ramp, it was on! When it hit about 4krpm it woke up and started to move. That's when I first understood the high speed handling characteristics of the 928 and decided there was no other choice. About a year later I found my white 86.5' and the rest is history.

I have had several fun toys in my time, still own my 78' 200hp Fiat Spider, just gave my last Mustang (68' coupe) to my youngest son. From my Cobra Jet 70' Mach 1 to my 76' F250 4x4 w/427 sideoiler, nothing has given me more driving enjoyment than my 928 has. Hell, I gave up my electronics career to play with Porsches. tough life isn't it?

As a child of the 80's...there was three cars that I lusted after....928...Ferrari 308 & Lambo Countach..not surprisingly all of those cars were TV-Movie famous in the 80's...the 928S in Weird Science did that sweet burnout!!!! Magnum had the 308 & Cannonball's hot chicks drove that Lambo that sounded soo sweet as it dusted the cops!! A neighbor and my orthodontist had 928's...they were just so bad ***....

In 2003 I started a new job & met (the original Stockton Sharks Society founder) Gerry....he told me he had a 928! I thought....damm those are expensive...then he told me he bought it for $3k back in 97 and drove it everyday since then! The gears started grinding ever since...after a drive in the 78 5 speed I thought...I have to get one of these! A year later I found a really nice 87 S4, but couldn't quite swing it....so Gerry bought it! Shortly later I found my 88 and the S.S.S was formed!

When I left the automobile business in 78 as an executive of a major Japanese automaker, I could purchase any car I wanted. It was an easy decision. A 928 for me and a 6.9 Mercedes for my wife. Now 27 years later I'm in my third 928.

I was working nights, and one morning a friend of mine called. I didn't answer, he kept calling and calling, finally I picked up the phone and screamed "WHAT!" He says "I hear that your looking for a Porsche." I said "not really but if one comes along that I like and is the right price I may." He says "it's a 928" I then said "ok I'm awake how much?" He tells me "$500" I jumped out of bed and ran to take a look at it. She was in rough shape but not tragic. 2 Months later I get married 2 days after that my wife gives me the car as a wedding present on the condition that I complete the project and we enjoy the car together.

I remember riding a school bus as a kid during a rain storm and we were stopped at a stop light when a gold 928 came up right next to where I was sitting and stopped. Then he turned on his lights.... oh I about creamed my pants! This was early 80's.

Later in '87 when I left for college, I had a deal with my dad. If I graduated Summa *** Laude, he'd buy me a 928 S4. If I got kicked out or moved in with a girl, I was on my own. 2 years later, I was asked to re-evaluate my academic career. Woops!

But I did finally manage to graduate magna *** laude, but I was on my own by then, so I also had to pick up the 928 on my own too. It's been a wonderful relationship so far!
