Right when I started working for Road & Track (back in "84"), the art director there took me for a scary ride in one and I fell in love right then. I had always liked the look but was really impressed with the performance

My father had 7 Corvettes throughout the 60’s and 70’s, he was no stranger to performance cars. He had no interest in Corvette’s after the 69 era cars, so he started looking at Porsche’s.

Early 80's when I was just a young lad my father was shopping for a 911SC. I can remember countless 911's he test drove from Kansas City to Topeka.
A friend of his who owned a small body shop always two 928's out front he was selling. I cannot recall if he fixed them, or how he came about having these cars. I do remember them being non-spoiler cars. Once my father drove a 928, he never looked at another 911. At the time in our family garage were two Rabbit convertibles (sisters cars) and a diesel rabbit pickup (I have no idea where this came from). He made a comment after driving the 928 that every 911 felt like a VW, he couldn’t get over that. He said the 928 felt more finished, refined. What he expected a Porsche to be like.
Things then changed dramatically for my father with his construction company, put buying a sports car on hold.

Fast forward to 1992, we now live in Wisconsin; I'm in high-school. One day I come home, there is a Mocha Brown 1981 928 in the garage. After high-school I wanted my own Porsche, dad talked me out of buying a 928 "too expensive to maintain - buy a 944 instead" so I did. Found a 944S (still have it) found out a 944S is far more expensive to own than a 16V 928. So a few years later I bought my fathers 928. It's now my daily driver in the summer, Lorelei is going to start driving the 944S next spring. Now he has a 2001 986S – great car but for the $30k he paid, I’d rather have a GT or GTS 928.

How did I get into 928's?

One night, there was a raid at the ***** house. As I ran out the back door the first car I saw that had its keys in it was a 928, I hopped in, took off and haven't stopped yet.

I was shopping for 911's and was a bit underwhelmed. Test drove a 928 and never looked back.

About three Summers ago, I was riding my bicycle down the road, on the way to the coffee shop or something like that when I heard this awesome rumble from behind. A few seconds later, a black S4 passed by, with that glorious, round butt! Oh, and the sound...awesome!

So I dropped a gear and pedaled like crazy trying to keep it in range, and did wind up getting a few seconds of "eye-time" at a stoplight. It was gorgeous, and took me back several years to the mid-80s when I first started noticing the car. Although I hadn't thought about the 928 in years, I remembered the auto mag article "World's Fastest Production Car" which featured the 928 on the cover, when it bested the Countach (Car & Driver, iirc).

So I gulped down my coffee, rode home, and jumped on the internet to begin learning about, and ultimately searching for, this car!

My dad was into the 60's Vettes as well, he had a Marlboro Maroon '65 with the 396 turbo jet in it. I wish he still had that car!

handed over the cash, grabbed the keys, opened the drivers door, got in and drove away.........sorry its the freezing weather.

Lusted after sports cars since knee high but we never had any money.............later on huge F1 fan got into racing myself but on 2 wheels. Semi sucessful pro career until the age thing caught up, looked around for a replacement for the speed thrill and found my car. After 5 years of ownership the LOVE is still mighty. Now all the mods are done I drive it with abandon; when the weather's OK!

Circa 1978 -- while goofing off after having completed my paper route for the day, I came across a black/black 1978 928 in downtown Mountain View. Brand spanking new, windows down, smell of leather wafting up out of the windows... I was in love. Periodically checked into 928's whenever I was looking at cars for sale, but never did anything about it till a couple years ago... and the rest, as they say, is history.

My dad owned several 911's over the years and I got to ride in and later drive them at early ages. We used to lovingly clean and condition them together in the greatest detail. I therefore always wanted a Porsche. The first Porsche I was able to afford was a 1983 944. I loved that car. I got very involved in Porsche ativities and club and such and one day I saw a photo of a man in a wheelchair getting into or out of his red 928S4. So I had to have one. I started investigating and ended up buying one in Albuquerque, a 1987 S4 5spd. Once I had driven the car and owned it a while, I really couldn't say the 944 was as much fun anymore, neither the 944S I had bought since, so I sold the 944's and bought my wife at the time another S4, that one was an auto. Since then I have owned many 928's and a 952 as well as a 911. They were all excellent cars, but my favourite is still the S4 5pd.

I returned it because the seller hadn't realised it had some very major crash history. He was a good guy so he was pretty embarrassed and took it back. He still has the car today.

Saw an ad in Architectural Digest way back in 1979....showing the cockpit of the 928..and thinking to myself man it would be cool to sit in that car and have it wrap around you.. Bought every 928 model that I could find...and even listed owning a 928 as one of my highschool senior goals for the future...

Lost sight for a while until grad school, when a friend and I had a bet who would be the first to own a 928...I lost that bet since he got out of school..and lived rent free at home and had plenty of free cash....

I picked up my first one (84S) back in 98...(from non other than Mark Anderson who posted on the 928 list at the time that he didn't want to part this one out...)...
upgraded to a 87S4 in 99 after the 84 was totalled...and then on to my current ride...the 89GT in 2002...

As far as my friend..he lost the interest and switched to a Corvette..but still says he misses his 928.. me on the other hand..will never willingly be without a 928....

Later,
Tom
