Default Brake Questions

I am looking to purchase the parts for a brake job next spring when my car comes out of storage, and I have a few questions. The car is a 1980 Euro S and I want to increase its brake performance. My thoughts were to replace the front rotors with Zimmerman slotted rotors and the rears with Zimmerman cast hole rotors. For pads I was thinking either Hawk ceramic or EBC redstuff /yellowstuff pads. Does anyone have any experience with either brand of pad? Can I still maintian the pad wear indicators? I do not track the car but do want to upgrade performance with out breaking the bank. I had thought about upgrading to S4 brakes on the front but it requires a spindle change and that is beyond my mechanical abilitites. Anyone have any idea how close my proposed setup is to the performance of the S4 fronts. I have heard that the S brakes with "good" pads are effective stoppers and that several racers use the same setup.

I would appreciate your thoughts

Paul

Paul - I can't answer your questions about brake pads but I'll share with you my experience with the 'S' type brakes. I installed the Zimmerman slotted rotors in front and the 'plain jane' (no slots or cast holes) zimmerman rotors on the rear. I installed some Metalmaster pads front and rear. I'm a relative newbie to the track but used this setup for 3 DE events at Watkins Glen. The 'S' brakes work very good (turn 1 at WG is a good brake system capacity test). Eventually I got to the point of practicing threshold braking. I never had any noticeable fade, soft pedal, etc. with the 'S' brakes. You will be hard pressed to use the full capacity of the 'S' brakes in normal to spirited street driving. Slotted rotors are a good choice for the front (where most of your braking is done) in that they keep the pads clean. Don't go too crazy on the rear brake system as the rear brakes are kinda just along for the ride. Make sure you change the fluid every year or 2 with a good brand brake fluid for normal driving. I use Valvoline DOT 3/4 synthetic brake fluid with good results. If you do make it to the track (which I highly recommend) flush the brake fluid at least every year. Good Luck!
