Default brake squeek

Hello to everybody.First time posting. For the last two weeks i am hearing a squeek at the front left side of my shark. At first i thought it was a suspension noise but then i realized the squeek was going on after i steped on my brakes. I took the wheel off tried cleaning the rotors and calipers with brake cleaner but the noise is still there.I realized that it only does it when the engine is working. When the engine is off i step on the brake petal and there is no sqeek. When i fire the car up the brakes squeek when i step on the petal.Has anybody has/had that problem before and what did you do to fix it.I have a 86.5 with 139.000 miles full stock

With an '86.5, you have the 4 piston calipers ... correct? If so, look in the back ( through the wire spring clip that retains the pads) and see if there is adequate pad material left, and that they are both of ~ equal thickness and wearing parallel to the steel backing plate. If worn, the time to replace is close ..
If the pads look fine, open the spring clip, and remove the pads. Spray all the crap away from the pistons with a can of brake cleaner: this can be an awful mess, co catch the 'drippings' in a tray and don't breathe the stuff. See what you find ...

First off, welcome!

The 928 brakes have a tendancy to squeak. If you're using a harder pad or track pad, they will squeak under "normal street diving." The solution is to use a softer pad like the Mintex Street pads available at 928 Specialists or 928 Int'l, or drive like you're on the track all the time!

Garth's suggestion is still valid, but usually will not cure the issue, it'll just make it less pronounced.

BTW, the reason you hear it with the engine on vs. off is that with the engine on you're gaining the benefits of the brake booster which applies greater clamping force. With the engine off you cannot apply as much force, and you are in essence, feathering the brakes - thus no squeak. To verify this, try driving the car with the engine on and apply the brakes lightly and see if it still squeaks.

YMMV

Anrew great to be here. The squeek that my car is making is not the usual noise that comes out of our cars when we apply the brakes. It`s a noise that sounds like the suspension needs to be oiled or greased at some point .If the car is stoped the engine is running and i push the brake petal i can hear the squeek. If i get out of the car and i push down on that side i can hear the squeek still with the engine running. If i turn the engine off wait for 10 min.and do the same thing there is no noise. It`s beginning to blow my mind because therotors and pads are only about 14 months old and i`ve done about 10.000 miles since then.I am however going to take the wheel off this weekend and follow Garths advice to try to kleen it and see what happens

Hummm, I had assumed ( incorrectly) that the noise came from a rotating wheel.
Before loosening the lugnuts, jack up the wheel in question and slowly rotate it. Also, grasp the wheel firmly at 9 and 3 o'clock positions and attempt to 'wiggle' it. Repeat at 6 and 12 o'clock positions - careful with the hand at '6' .
Also check the caliper mounting bolts - although if they are Brembo's, they are top mount fasteners.
Anyway, the point is to look for any looseness in tie rods, bearings, calipers, etc. In any event, they are reasonable checks to do any time a front wheel is lifted. Hope you turn up a clue to the mystery!

I agree with Garth but would add if bearings, ball joints, tie rods, and brake bolts (62ftlbs) check out okay, then look at drop links bolts (62ftlbs), upper A-arm bushings, lower control arm bolts (rear 88ftlbs - front 62ftlbs) & bushing (rarely go - but they could be toast), front sway bar clamps/mounts to body (33ftlbs), also make sure wheel lugs are properly torqued (95ftlbs).

Unfortunately none of this stuff explains why you hear it with the engine running - and not when it's off. Hmmmmm.

If the car is cold, and you start the engine (w/o driving), do you hear the noise when stepping on the brake? Or does it only come after you've been driving the car for a while?

If it's there immediately, then I would suspect you have a some type of vacuum leak that is exacerbated when stepping on the brake/pushing on the car - perhaps the vacuum check valve or booster? If it takes a while to appear then it's probably heat related - as it dissipates after the car has sat for 10 minutes or so. In this case, I would suspect caliper bolts and possibly suspension parts. Why not have a friend, neighbor, wife, or kid step on the brake while you get under the car and listen. You should be able to pinpoint it fairly quickly.

Let us know what you come up with.
