TIME OUT!!

Before you do any thing else, swap Relay X (blower) and Relay VIII (defrost). If the blower now works on heat, but not on defrost, get a new "53" relay.

If the problem is in the resistor pack, the usual problem is that the blower will work on the highest speed, but nothing else...

OK, this is really weird.

My car is an early 86. I got the chart from your site, Wally.

My relays are different than your chart.

III is entirely absent-- empty. VIII has a fuse tester plugged into it, not a relay. Hence I could not swap VIII and X.

My relay panel looks most like the chart for the 83-84 stuff. How can that be?

Do I have some weird hybrid car? The wiring and relay panel look original... everything looks like it hasn't been messed with. It looks factory, if you know what I mean.

Help?

Default best picture I could get

As you can see... III missing, VIII has a fuse tester, XXVI and XXI are also missing..

Did Porsche run out of 86 relay panels the day they built mine and use some leftover parts or something?

OK, I've studied it some more, and except for the fuse tester, it is a standard 86 panel. The things that are missing are supposed to be missing. But why would somebody shove a fuse tester in the socket for the defrost?

Sigh. This car has an almost unlimited capacity to spool me up...

Some cars have a relay with the added feature of a fuse tester built in. That's not just a fuse tester!

Yeah, that fuse tester is a relay too. Look on the side, you'll see the coil and contact diagram.

Thadd,

Do what Wally P says. this exact same thing happend to me. It was the relay, and I found it by pullin the relay and jumpering it . Fan worked fine. Now, if youre really a stupid Minnesota Shark owner, you'd wire in a toggle swiitch to turn that fan on in the winter while you drive in snow on 35W in the morning heading into the city. But I know you're not dumb enough to actaully do all of these at once... - Ruf

Thad-
Well that's just a darn shame. Ya know how it is in Minnesota and them Alberta Clippers. When I was growing up in Robbinsdale, I had to park my car outside, and the cold would wreak havoc on my VW (don't cha know...) - I can only imagine what it's like on the 928.

Man I miss lefse, swedish meatballs, Krumkaka, Minnesota Caserole, and all the other Scandahoovian dishes. Don't miss the bitter cold, though.

I don't know about the 86, but I bet it is the same. The air duct (hood up, outside of fire wall, passenger side) has a junction that is covered by a runbber boot. If you peel back the boot, you can reach in and get hold of the resistor pack. Having small hands helps......I watched as the service tech did mine a few years back......save the old one, it makes a great paperweight......

'Course, do what Wally says FIRST.......

The fuse tester is just a standard "53" relay with the tester added - it is completely interchangeable with the standard "53" relay. Just swap them, and see if that fixes the problem.

If so (and it should) you can either buy the standard relay and forego the fuse tester, or buy the special relay with the tester.

standard "53" Genuine Porsche 141.951.253.B $17.82
standard "53" OEM 141.951.253.B.OEM $4.50
fuse tester Relay - Defroster 85-86 928.615.203.00 $33.90

Thanks for the input, Wally, guys. I will have to check tomorrow since it is dark and cold outside and the old man is tired tonight...

Talking FIXED. Thanks guys!

Well, I got a whole passle of relays in the mail today from 928 Specialists... replaced the VIII and X... and my fan does what she should. Booyah!

Thanks Wally!

Warmed Sharky up real good too. Second warmup since she went in storage right before Thanksgiving... started on the second turn after sitting a month.

AND if this year is like last year, I may be able to get her out of mothballs in only 9 more weeks. I CAN'T WAIT!

Life is looking brighter...

Thaddeus, I had exacly the same symptoms in my car last year. Thankfully, the fix was simple: I removed the AC controller and cleaned off the slider contacts inside, after which the system worked just fine.

Thaddeus,

Just had the same problem in my early 86S last month. No fan speeds work 1-4 nor did the AC switch. Defroster worked though.
It turned out to be a bad relay. Try that first not the resistor pack.
