Wet driver's footwell - where's the leak?
Hi guys,
Had a lot of snow here last couple of days and now have soaking driver's side footwell (RHD). I can see drips running down the interior trim where the side piece (alongside the screen) meets the rooflining - it runs in when I brake.
I suspected a blocked sunroof drain but all 4 seem clear (ran them through with nylon wire). Any other ideas??
Thanks
Mark

Had an identical leak on my 83 and it turned out to be a leak at the bottom of the windshield in the center. The water would flow along a lip to the drivers side and fall directly on my foot.

Mark,
my early 86S does the exact same thing. I always see standing water under the sunroof around the drain hole. That area has started to rust.
As an experiment i covered the sunroof area with a waterproof fabric during several rain storms and no water leak. Also if I park the car at an angle with front end higher than the back end. The water drains out the rear hatch drains with no problem. If the nose of the car is pointing down with the rear end higher water will run into the foot well.
I assume the sunroof seals are no good and the sunroof drain holes are overwhelmed and cannot keep up. Hence the standing water always left in the sun roof area.

The area at the base of the windshield under the hood where the hinges ,wiper motor, blower motor are located is a WET WELL . It is designed to allow water to run off the windscreen and is SUPPOSED to drain harmlessly out a flapper valve located on the firewall. On left hand drive cars this rubber flapper is on the right side of the engine below the coolant reservoir. Over time debris leaves pine needles OFTEN accumulates inside the well and blocks the flapper drain so that rain ,carwash can cause the water to build up in the well until it finds a way to drain INSIDE the car typically through the blower fan and on LHD cars it then drips onto the fuse relay board passenger floor. I am not sure where the rubber flapper is located on the RHD car but I strongly suggest that you find it !

U-boat commanders will know that flap as a "scupper". Closes automatically in dive conditions.

The drain of the HVAC Box in the right of the driver footwell can be clogged also!

It´s german but the pictures are international! It´s the drain for the water from the air condition.
