Default Vibration Issue

My shark tends to vibrate at 50mph and up. This vibration is not noticeable at lower speeds and tends to amplify as speed increases. No odd vibration in neutral at idle (clutch out TT spinning). I can feel it in my seat and it is very prominent in the gear shift ****. Also, more acceleration equals more prominent vibration. For example, at a steady 60mph vibration is noticeable. Push clutch in and coast at 60mph and vibration is noticeable but not so badly transmitted through the gear shift ****. Ease up to 80mph and vibration eases up. Acelerate hard from 60 to 80+ vibration amplified even more through acceleration.

The only trouble shooting I've done thus far is with the CV joints/axels, they seem to be ok. I'm beginning to think I have a bent phone dial.

Any ideas?

Brake rotors warped? or there was a thread about the abs sensors doing something.

If you can feel it in your seat, and especially in the shifter, I would tend to believe the trouble is in the drive train rather than wheels or rotors. My tranny vibrates quite noticeably at almost any speed until it gets good and warm. Then it's smooth.

If it is truly speed dependent and not RPM dependent, then I would check the half shafts between the transmission and rear wheels.

Other ideas:

Bent half shaft.
Worn bearings in tranny.
Worn rear wheel bearings.

Check your wheels and tires. You could have lost a balancing weight or the radial belt in one of your tires may have broken and the higher rpm's will cause it to separate.

You may check this rare one. I had a similar problem but at 90 mph up. Found bad wheel spacer allowing wheel to be mounted just off true center.

Have you check transmission mounts?

If you feel it in your seat that means the vibration is from the rear. Doesn't sound like rotors, tires, or TT to me.

Mine does it a 2800-3200k, sometimes real bad sometimes not at all, but only in the shifter. I have changed the CV axles and rear wheel bearings, mine is either in the tranny or TT.

that turned out to be a bad master cylinder the BMW i was referencing to on the thread.

you have to isolate the vibration. i had one that was seeming to be a drive shaft vibration, and it just turned out to be mufflers vibrating on the chassis.

try all the rpms, with clutch put in and clutch out (still in neutral)

To expand on Scotts point, do a steady 50 ( or 60) mph in each of 3rd, 4th, and 5th ..... noting any differences.

Motor Mounts? Mine car would start vibrating (small vibration) at 55Mph and up until I replaced the Motor mounts. I'd check the simple stuff first, wheel balance, CV joints, etc.... Good Luck!

My motor mounts are new. The TT has also been replaced recently. The vibration seems to be speed dependant. The vibration does not change much overall between 3rd, 4th and 5th and a steady speed. Tranny mounts are good. I'll try the simple stuff first and hope for the best.

Scott, get you wheels checked to see if there is a bent wheel, I had similar vibration and I had a rear wheel bent, just slightly. Caused similar vibration to what you are having.

I had a slight vibration on my car when I bought it and persisited after new tires that you could just feel at 45 then came back much harder at 80. I replaced rotors, pads, motor mounts, tie rod ends, and the vibration persisted (they needed to be replaced anyway - I didn't do because of the vibration).

This past friday after work I swung by the tire shop and had them road-force balance my front wheels, and they were off quite a bit off from their initial balance. I also had them measure the lateral and radial runouts pf the wheels and they were both within +-0.030" which is pretty darn good. They did not have to re-align the tire to the wheel. So with new weights properly placed, I was on my way - a smooth and happy camper.
