Default Starting problem

Question for the experts. Just recently, my car will not start on the first try. It cranks fine and sounds normal, it just won't start. After the first crank, the car always starts and runs fine. I'm thinking the fuel pump relay might be the cause, but why would it work intermittently?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, the cheapest idea is swapping out fuel pump relay, LH relay and EZK relay in turn for a known good one....

Immobiliser alarms can also cause problems. Try jumping the fuel pump relay and see if the car starts first time.

My only problem with suspecting the fuel pump relay is that then wouldn't it run like crap all the time? Why just at startup? I would would suspect crank sensor, but that's a WAG.

I tend to agree, especially if the behavour is consistant. But relays are always a good starting point :-)

Mark - does the tach flicker when you crank the engine, but it doesn't fire ?

This is characteristic of a failed check valve.

Yes, pressure is being lost while standing, first crank starts to build, but it dies before pressure comes up. Second crank makes it. Either check valve, or accumulator if fitted . Accumulator is in front of RR wheel - if no breather on top, undo small screw and check for fuel wetness, which will indicate the diaphragm is perforated.
