Default Ball Joint Protective Caps

The protective caps on my ball joints are bad. The shop manual indicates that when they break down the connecting parts should all be replaced. While understanding that, I am wondering if only the caps themselves can be replaced at least temporarily. Not even sure they come as a separate part.

Thanks!

Assuming you are talking about the rubber ball joint boots.... it depends on how long they have been exposed to the elements. With the hub casting loose from the ball joint in question you can rotate the joint itself and see if it moves freely without binding and also check for excessive slop between the ball and cup. If in doubt change it! I just replaced two ball joint boots on my 86.5 last month 928sp has the parts as i am sure others do. Make sure you clean the joint VERY well.

We (and the other vendors) sell ball joint boots separately - they are in our on-line store, or you can call Jeannie at (828) 766-9280. It is certainly worth replacing the upper joint boots, cleaning and lubricating the joints as you do so. Porsche does not offer the upper joints, only the complete upper control arm.

You didn't give the model year of your 928 (it always helps to know the year) - if you have an early car (before Sept '83, VIN 92ES860404), it may still have the original aluminum lower ball joint carriers. If so, they should be replace with steel versions ASAP!

Thanks! I will order the boots. As to the joint itself, what is the recommended lubricant?
