now, need some cams!

by the way, did some more verification of what cams they are.. timing was set to 2.0mm on pass and 2.0mm on driver (spec is 1.8 and 2.0 respectively for S4 cams and 1.6 and 2.0 for 85-86 cams)
so, it certainly is not a GT cam as that particular spec is in the 3mm range for both.

so, based on how i was measuring, i certainly could be .2mm off. so, i think they are S4 cams with 85 lift. base circle seems to be the same, bearing widths are the same.

Now i need to find out how to modify the driver exhaust cam , as all others will bolt in after hacking off the uneeded ends.

any ideas.

GT cams will probably be the answer!

tick tock. 2 weeks for the race! well, i know i can put them together in a few hours, just need the cams!!!!!
HELP!!

MK

by the way, the lift is 10mm on the 85 cam (same as GT), vs the 9mm for the S4 cam. i have all three sets in front of me and was measuring and marking cams last night!

I have cam analysis software and will plot the lift/duration of Mark's special cams for the record.

iirc, you still have my 85 cams, you'd just need to tweak them and you'd be good to go... might try a local cam shop/or elgins....

I have records of the GT cams. I do not have '85/'86 cams to measure. I do have S4 cams, but have not taken a profile of those. I would appreciate it if you could send your intake & exhaust cams. I'll take profiles. If I can get '85/'86 cams, I'll do those too for comparison.

Mark, why don't you send him the 85 passenger pair also. That way Louie can map them while you get the driver's side modified. I'd think a good engine shop or general machine shop could do the mods. It's only shortening and making a shoulder, right?

Thats what im going to do. send the passenger side.

shorting (easy) , grinding off the existing one side thrust bearing surface , machine shop can do this, and then buid up a shoulder. (not so easy, especially if you dont want to expose cam to heat.)

I also have two unused 85 cams that were from a set of four where two were broken. NOt sure which ones the good ones are, but they could go in for testing or whatever

I don't have '85'86 heads to check these in. If someone has '85/86 heads and doesn't mind taking lift readings starting at 0.001" lift and reading lift every degree or two all the way around, I could input that data into the cam profile program. You need to use the stock lifter and measure lifter movement. Measuring the cam lobe with a dial indicator won't work. Also, You'd need the intake cam driven by the exhaust cam to get the intake/exhaust cam relationship.

a couple of choices .

company that has a pretty good rep for fixing with some proprietary way of attaching new sprockets stronger than the original . "parts works". Web cam recommened them. they use some real high tech way to do this. they used to do same kind of mods to large industrial paper machines using cams running 24/7. it transfered over to the auto industry easily and they are very confident they can do a repair. most have said , stay away from repairing cams used in racing applications, but these guys also have done this for 968s , in particular, PowerHouse as a customer too.
anyone heard of them?

second, most desirable, modify the 85 cams

third, most costly, but guaranteed to work, GT cams if i can find them.

(fourth, to put in stock S4 cams...............nah!!!)

Why not get some B1 cams from Marc T.? They work really well.
