Default Bosch Blue Coil's

Is anyone running the famous Bosch Blue coil's in their 928S 32 valve ?.
What other options are there beside the oem Bosch black coil replacement?.
I would like to replace mine since they are approaching 21 years in age.

I don't know if you are talking about appearence or function, but i'll take a shot. I have the shiny aluminum coils in my euro. They look good as coils go.

tv,

Yes I mean blue as in appearence. Bosch makes a great looking all blue coil that was for the aircooled cars. Still 12 volts though. I was wondering if it could be used on a 928.
I have seen the chrome base coil's and they look great too.

I don't think you're supposed to use the Bosch Blue coil on a electronic ignition car. The blue coils are internally ballasted(resistor in the primary winding) and will either overheat on a electronic ignition car, or will not put out sufficient voltage. The blue coil is for an old points/condeser setup. Now, it's certainly possible that Bosch makes a blue colored coil that is not internallly balasted, but we would need the PN of the coil and a lookup chart to know for certain.

I can remember Wally plumley telling me once that there was no coil on the market that would match the performance of the stock unit without causing some mayhem with the electronics.

You can always buy an $8.00 chrome slip-on coil cover at pep boys or from JC whitney.

They look just fine if your primary concern is some additional eyecandy.

From the Factory Workshop Manual, Page D24/28-3:

"The specified coil (refer to order number) must not be replaced by a different coil."

A blue coil was stock in my 81 euro. The PO had replaced it incorrectly and the car was misfiring above 2500 rpm. I bought the car for 2/3 of it's value at the time since it had a "big problem".

My '80 model US car came with ( when it came in the family) a blue coil, was on there for 13+ yrs, then I swaped it for a MSD one, runs fine.
