No, it doesn't sound right. Does it ultimately lock into place?

Mine did the same thing from day 1 too Ron.

What i did was pull the center console and lay a big double thick sheet of aluminum foil in there(with a slot cut out for the shifter lever).

It deflects the heat back down away from the cabin.

My window switches used to get so hot at operating temp. they'd almost literally burn you to the touch, now even on hot days i can actually touch them without frying my fingers, lol.

"forgot to mention when I stop the car and put the shifter in park the car will roll several inches if it's on a incline in park!!!.
Does that sound right?"

That's pretty common on most cars. Apply the P brake before you put it in park.

My switches get that hot too. I hate it and it is not acceptable for a GT car.
I may try the aluminum foil fix because I may never get around to pulling the transmission to fix the parking pawl. The console is a quick remove item and a lot less trouble than removing the torque tube and foam pad.

Has anyone ever actually tried the foam idea ?? Reason I ask is because concerned if foam could become toxic and flammable if exposed to temps near cats ? Correct me if wrong but isnt it possible for them to reach almost 5000* ??

I also have a hot console and I have new mounts on the car, so after 21 year the pad is capout I guess. But my AC is working perfectly. I'll probably install some sort of sheald or insulating material sometime in the future...

Ron, the aluminum foil actually works really well.

I'd say the temp of my window switches dropped a good 40 degrees F after the fix!!!

Yanking the cat helped too, but a lot of heat still comes up through that area. I just installed new mounts a few weeks ago, and while it helped to cut down the heat(especially the heat that seeps up out of the ash tray), the aluminum foil actually had a significantly bigger impact IMO.

Heh, there you have my ghetto tip of the day.

Dale:
The foam would be dispensed from a spraycan into the cavity above the factory foam insulating pad so the temperature of the air at that point should be less.

But to tell you the truth, I like Sniper's idea best, because the foil is removeable and replaceable if you ever need to get down in there. Example: to disconnect the shifter linkage without removing the torque tube and foam pad from below. The aluminum sheild could easily be removed to allow access and then replaced all in a few minutes to a couple of hours. And the fire danger is much less.

This is a common problem on all MY 928s so far as i know.

Mine is an 83, and my ex partners 85 also suffered from the same heating of the cabin problems(his was almost entirely cured with new mounts though).

thanks Shane. Very informative. Mine has a heat shield, but it may be the old one. I'll check it out.

Rich,
The "movement" of the car on an incline when the transmission selector is moved to P is common for this Mercedes transmission. It did that on 3 previous automatic S4's I've owned, on two MB 560's of the same era, and I expect it will happen on the '88 S4 I just bought from the Portland OR area. Just expect it (it's only 2-3 inches), or use the parking brake.

Anyone who uses foam for further insulation, be sure you DO NOT use the 3X expanding type. It has tremendous expansion force, and could dislocate some stuff!!!!

Gary,

ok-finally I don't have to spend money on another malady. I guess the parking brake will surfice !
I just dropped off the 928 at my shop. The trip took me onto a local highway for a very short distance. As far as the sluggish/lazy feel -I took snipers/dandeman's advice and kept it in 3rd gear. Man, the car really took on another life.
It had some serious grunt!!.

Thanks again for the thrust bearing/torque tube advice.

Rich

Rich, is your kickdown switch functioning properly? At more than moderate throttle in 4th, your transmission should kick down into 3rd. Particularly when on the freeway and passing another car, or getting on and off of the freeway, that 3rd gear kickdown should be immediate. May want to check your transmission fluid level.
