Sorry bout the delay but i keep getting kicked out of this forum when i try to post from the office..even moving from one page to another signs me out....anyway.....as i was saying, a bit of an update.
The engine is out....about a 10 hour job at the llocal garage....and the car's back home. I had given them a description of checking for flex plate tension and they confirmed it moved, but not a lot...don't have a measurement. Hope to open it up this week and see whether its rod or torque tube bearing. I drove the car to the garage....basically idled about half a mile...hadn't started the car in a month and a half and it fired right up on first touch....was a distinctive knocking noise but that almost seemed to quiet down by the time we got to the garage. Overnite they left the hatch open and drained the battery, so next morining when trying to get it on the hoist they had to put a recharged battery in...they tell me when they tried to fire it up, it started right away but then died as if it lost fuel or spark....wondeirng if the battery draining could have affected something....anyway, starting is the least of my concerns now. For a time i pursued a replacement engine but had no luck in Canada....the good low mile 90 GT engine in Toronto at Frank's which had had a 'minor' engine fire didn't pass the leak down test....turns out the fire in a fan bearing burned back through the tbelt cover and the tbelt itself ......while running.....TBF....anyway with a rebuilt i know what i've got
