How to test interior lights relay?
After noticing that my interior lights would not turn off, I switched them all from the 'door' position to the 'off' position, and figured that I would worry about it later. Well, I am worrying about it sooner, because of course, I forgot about the red lights in the doors that remained on and drained my battery.
I have checked the switches at the doors and the hatch, and everything seems fine, so I think the problem is with the interior lights relay. Before I blow $140 on one, does anyone know of a procedure that I can use to test that relay?
Thanks,

I have used interior relays for $45 one year warranty...the built in time delay late 86 > is 25 seconds plus 5 seconds. Unfortunately they sometimes forget how to count

Is it possible to jump the relay and have the lights come on when the door opens and off when it closes just to determine if the jumper is bad? If so, which terminals need to be jumped?
I've ordered a replacement - 928 International - with a one year warranty ;-) , but it's not here yet. It would be good to know if this is really the problem. I guess this is a question that I should have asked earlier, but the 928 International stuff is so incredibly cheap, that I went ahead. (Future discounts?) ;-)

Rod,
Terminal 31 & 31L when jumped make the lights come on - when open should be off. The door switches only go to the relay - but the tailgate switch should still turn the lights on & off - try that.
31 is a direct ground so if its easier for you just ground Terminal 31L. Or you can ground one of the Brown & White striped wires at the interior lights (any of them...).
Alternatively - easier is to test relay between terms 31 & 31L it should be open circuit when not energized (when unplugged) but if its shorted continuously it would explain your symptoms.
Pulling the relay may get rid of your immediate problem ... if not you have a short to ground some where on the interior lights - not unheard of - do any interior lights not work in door switch mode but do work in continuous on mode? - if so investigate ?. Good news is that a short here shouldn't damage the relay...
If the relay is faulty you have little to loose by dissassembling it (if you can get it open) look to clean/ separate the primary contacts... worth a shot - instructive too - then buy a new one!

Thanks, I'll try that this weekend. I have no interior lights at any time, unless I physically turn them on. The door lights will turn on from the switch and the red lights in the door are apparently on all of the time. At least they stay on when I press the door switch.
It seems like this means the relay is bad, but ignorance is bliss.
