Default Is this normal? (ALARM OPERATION - jayzus)

Couple of weeks ago I locked up the shark with the key on the drivers side door. My dad had to run back to the car to get something. When we came back to the car later that day I unlocked the car from the drivers side. When I opened the door the alarm sounded. So I closed the door and relocked and the alarm stops. Unlock and open and the alarm sounds again. Did this three or four times with the same results. We finally tried it from the passanger side and guess what, no alarm! So my question is, does the car have to be unlocked from the same door it was initally locked from to disarm the alarm? When my Dad ran back to the car he went in from the pass side with no issues. Maybe my shark was upset because we were at the Good Guys car show at Pleasanton to check out other cars!

Hmm, I wonder if you're onto something there, G Man. I've experienced the odd alarm upon key unlock, too. Of course, I usually go in and lock from the driver's door, but once I tried to unlock from the passenger door, triggering the alarm. I figured it was a bugaboo with my car. I didn't do anything about it, but on another occassion I tried it again, without setting off the alarm. Wierd. The owner's manual does not say you must lock/unlock from the same door, so maybe it's just a malfunction of some kind.

No.

The end of the lock cylinder has a section that switches on or off the alarm. Apparently the alarm switch on the drivers door has either failed or one of the wires has come disconnected. You need to pull the lock cylinder and check the contacts- the alarm portion comes off when you remove two screws at the end with a tiny jeweler's screwdriver. Or just buy a new lock cylinder. Call the Big 3, they have the parts in stock on the cheap. You're going to have to pull the door panel though.

In my humble opinion, the factory alarm and central locking on these cars suck. I've disabled both systems on mine, and I'm not sure I'm ever going to try to repair them, since I have enough gray hairs as it is.

N!

The alarm system is a real pain in the ***, just my opinion. I am thinking of bypassing it.

I have to disable it from the rear hatch. It won't go off when I open the door but makes a heck of a racket when I try to start.

Mine had the same problem. I disassembled the driver's side switch*, cleaned the contacts and lubed it with dialectric grease, and have had no problems for 2 years.

Actually, I do have a problem occasionally, if I use a too quick motion unlocking the doors, I don't trip the switch, and it goes off. (Or, since I removed the door lock motors**, one side may be unlocked, and I'll lock/arm the other side, and then open the unlocked side, doh!) But I think it's good to remind your neighborhood that you do, in fact, have an alarm.

*WATCH OUT for the tiny springs inside the switch!
**I eventually will install a remote door lock system, and put in simple solenoid actuators.

I've had it with that stupid remote hatch release mechanism, too.

One solenoid actuator would easaily replace the 352 parts that are in that motorized gizmo!
