Default I simply removed this from the car today...

Someone decided to beef up the armrest cover on my car. This is thick aluminum plate and weighs in 1.6 pounds. I guess someone decided it should never sag again. PM if you need a bullet-proof armrest cover.

Default Doors

Hi,

I´m just about to save as much weight as possible on the doors of my racer project.

How much of the door can one actually cut off and still make it function as a door?
I will have a fixed plastic window (lexan). I want to keep the rubber lining but dont need any inner cover on the door.

Any pics of your modified doors will be appriciated.

Cheers,

Don Hanson cut everything but the outer edge and top "sill" which usually contains the lock pin. I think he left that part so the door didn't cut his arm & he could rest his arm on top of it when needed. I'd delete the mirror & instal a plastic or fiberglass one.

The door actually weighs very little, once you delete non-aluminum parts. That safety bar inside can come out presuming you have a roll cage. Your best advisor here would be Mark Anderson.

Perfect! Thanks guys.

That picture is very helpful.

Replacing the mirrors is a good idea.

Any thoughts about taking it one step further and cutting along the red line in the picture?

I think the rib along that upper edge is the only thing keeping the whole door skin from collapsing under its own weight. If Anderson thought he could have gotten away with removing it, he would have.

OMG. Race car or street car?

Anyone actually weighed all the bits removed vs their replacements?

BTW the lightest Porsche mirror I came up with is RS America mirrors with 928 bases. Its basically a manual GTS mirror
much lighter than the flag mirrors

Default Cutting the door open

Before and after pictures below.

A total of 9,5kg lost on one door incl the removal of the mirror. More than I expected.

Those side mirrors are stupid-heavy. I went to Pegasus Racing and grabbed a set of their Formula Ford mirrors. Very light. They vibrate on the ultra-light door skin, but the blur is all I need. I don't need to know WHAT is on my quarter, I just need to know there IS something on my quarter...

Now they have these new GT mirrors that look better than the ones I have:

Not a bad price for CF...
