Thanks for all your help. This WEB forum has been a great resource. -- I took the car back to the second shop (the guy that fixed the coupler). He had not inspected the entire clutch assembly the first shop installed. There is some connection between the shops and he was assured by the first shop that the first mechanic had done things correctly. Obviously, this was not the case. When he disassembled things, he found that a couple of bolts had come loose. -- Things have been repaired at the dealers expense and the clutch feels pretty good. -- The mechanic/shop owner who finally did things correctly was "older" and experienced with 928s. I hope he sticks around a while. -- Thanks again. -- Pete

there is no doubt in my mind, an updated clutch arm, and centering tube are needed....I learned this the hard way....I will say however that the dealer should have caught this, as it was a factory mandated revision, and is in the Manual...I dont think there are many knowledable guys about these cars at the dealers anymore.....RAMauto..in Raleigh, and Wrenchworthy .in Harrisburg

In the 8 years since this odd situation, where it looks like there were a series of mistakes made on the car at that time and 30K miles BEFORE that, there have been some fantastic upgrades.
Awesome central tube bearings.
Also, for clamping methods for automatic cars.
And water pumps. Timing belts. Tensioner. Brake upgrades. Interiors. List goes on.
If a shop can't cite rennlist, its probably just a poser.
Stay a while, this is the online center of the universe for 928.

What ? "the torque tube was too long. " pure BS ... Motor mounts have no effect what so ever since the engine upper bellhousing torque tube and transmission are all bolted together and STAY together when replacing the clutch. Very unfortunate that the guesses by the parts changers of what might have been wrong, were wrong. MY GUESS is when the clutch replacement was last done they used superseded release bearing parts BUT did not replace the clutch arm. The updated part is 928 116 832 09 you might check the records of the clutch work.

Evert. Welcome. Nice necro-post. But for the rest, the moral of the story, even today is don't take your car to 928 novicies, including the dealer.
