Can VIN Identification be used ID'ing Option Codes??
There is a super clean 1982 928 5-speed with 89K original miles in my area, I went out to look at it and unfortunately the "white label" under the carpet in the back is missing (but it has never been hit--very clean), the previous owner was such a neat-freak he probably peeled it off? And the dealer never put the Option sticker in the Warranty/Service Manual either. I am trying to determine if this has a LSD, but without those two ways to identify how can you do it short of mailing the VIN into Porsche Amearica? I believe the diff cases/hubs are nearly identical, or at least not having them side-by-side, I couldn't tell. I am much more familar with 944's.
The number on the tran case: says G28/05 11C 1095, and I have the VIN of course. DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW YOU CAN IDENTIFY if this car has an LSD? I could e-mail photos of the diff/tran and cv joints, the clutch hubs if that helps. HELP!! The car is the cleanest Shark I have ever seen |
There should be 12 in gearbox number if it has LSD so number you give says it has normal non-LSD differential. Just by looking from outside its impossible to say if '78-89 gearbox has LSD or not as casing is exact same. On LSD car lifting rear end up and rotating one wheel other wheel should rotate to same direction, not opposite like in open diff.

Thanks for the Info...
Thanks!! Did not know without engaging driveline you could tell the difference? Great tip; insofar as I am using it as a DE car and maybe eventually exclusively so, I believe the LSD is essential, wouldn't you? It makes a big difference with the 944T and 944S2, but I have never tracked or driven a 928 spiritedly to know if indeed that is true. What would be your opinion?

If any way possible get LSD or at least count it's purchase price in when thinking of buying DE car without it.
LSD makes opposite wheel rotate same way or at least it stays put. It never rotates opposite direction where as on open diff it does. This is easy way of seeing if car has LSD or not. |
Reminder:
To do this simple test, make sure the gearbox is in neutral and the brake is off. Both rear wheels in the air. Test the breakaway torque on your LSD with a torque wrench, one rear wheel still on the ground, car in neutral, brake off. Take two readings, one with the wrench pointed directly outward from the center of the hub, other with the wrench 180 degrees away. Average of the two readings is hom much "anti-slip" friction you have available off the line. |
The Certificate of Authenticity would list the options of the car...but they are kinda pricey! I have heard they aren't always accurate...but mine was?

The VIN cannot tell you any serious option data.
Airbags yes, LSD No But I think you knew this much! Good Luck. Alan |

Uh - well I'd say that was the dealer telling you the options - Not the VIN.....
Besides my dealers only that friendly when I'm looking like I might actually buy someything! Alan |
If you call 1-800-PORSCHE and give them the VIN, they can give you all option codes including the birth date of your car, colours, options etc. I'm not sure which years this works for but it did on my 86. I seem to remember the cutoff being around 82 or 83 for this info...

 Oh yes this is an option too...Calling in. Sorry, I am so used to going directly to the dealer and asking. Yep, I'd bet my life on it becuase I have done it NUMEROUS times on just about every single Porsche that I have owned except my '81 928 (didn't try because I did not know it could be done at the time I owned it). Take my word for it...I have answered your question for you- no "negative naysay". Just take the VIN to the dealer and they can tell you on the spot (ususally I go to the Parts and Service counter). :bigbye: |
DoubleNutz and Touque: Thanks for all the info, never knew you could go by phone, as I thought they did not state "non-obvious" options, such as shock & susp. mods, LSD, etc. Never too old to learn...

The dealership could not tell you if you had the code for a LSD, or any other Mods? That is very strange. I would call another dealership and SPECIFICALLY ASK for the option codes your car was factory manufactured with. |
Check...will do.
