Aero mirror conversion to early model

:grr: Anyway, not so easy, but there is a solution, I recently bought some aero mirrors on Ebay and just had them painted. (I also painted my other S2, looks absolutely beautiful too) When I fitted them I found to my dismay that they didn't work as I wished. D'oh! Anyway there is some guys that sell a conversion kit. Not cheap, as they stopped making it, but they will remake it for me and do the wiring in the correct colors for the early 928. It then becomes a very simple fitting procedure, before I email them my order, I was wondering if anybody else out there had a better option?

The price of the kit would likely come down in bulk, I would need money in my Paypal account before I pay them for the order, i.e. don't want to get stuck with unwanted gear. The price I have been quoted is $220 AUD and that equals about $160 USD. I will place my order tommorow my time.

Cheers Greg

Greg-
I too was saddened when I couldn't wire up my mirrors. But I have found that since I'm the only one who drives the car, that once they're set I have little need to get the motors workign again. That said, getting them to work is on my list of to-do's. I thought it might be easier to find a switch out of a later model and retro fit it into my 82. Maybe not. I'll figure it out one of these days. $160 = 4 bottles of nitrous! I'd rather go fast! LOL! :burnout:

P.S. Dave Lomas said he knoew how to wire them up. He said it's hard, but not impossible. You may want to drop him a line.

I'm doing the same thing in a week - what was the problem with the wires -to me it look pretty simple. 2 el-motors 2*plus/2*minus + 2 wires for heating- the el-motors share the plus/or minus.
In my 78' there are 5 cables from the old mirror - and 5 cables in the new to ?!?!?

Read this thread:
Aero Mirror Wiring to OB

I never called Dave Lomas (Ketchmi), but if you do, and figure it out, please let me know.

I think you will find that the solution is roughly the same. I have employed an electrical engineer to solve this problem, he has done this many times before. As to why would it be so hard you are correct Andrew in directing him to that old thread, I wish I would have seen that before buying the mirrors. It is certainly not straight forward.

Keep your old motors and reinstall them in your Aero mirrors. Thats what I did, and sold the aero motors on ebay.

I think that only works if you have S4 style mirrors as that wiring has been somewhat updated.

Andrew/Greg - just spoke to my electric wizzard - this weekend he will stop by a show me how to do it ( he mentioned something about + and - 12 volt's, but pretty simple he said ), i'll keep you posted

Thanks, that will be interesting.

Cheers Greg

Greg,

I think Ed is referring to using all the guts out of your OBs flag style mirrors. Wiring, motor, etc. Bolt it into the new aero mirrors and attatch the aero glass. I think Chris Ford did the same thing, although it was an 87 I think it's the same concept.

A solution

Here is the conversion kit I bought to make my aero mirrors work. It is required for the early cars as the mirrors work differently on these models as apposed to how the s4 mirrors work. It is very neat and the electronics fit down the gap in the door skin.

Greg,

You are on to something there! Just connect same wires on car side to same wires on mirrors side?
Sounds like a winner, where do we get them?

I had no problem wit the GTS aero mirror upgrade in my 85S PRDATR. Any of the BIG3 can sell you wire kits to fix your problems. I think I got mine from DR (928 Specialists).

I'm pretty sure the Big3 don't have this. Otherwise Jim Bailey  would have included them in my sale.

So Greg, where did you get these?
