They are called "triple-squares" You can find the set of them at the local Auto Bone, Poop Boys, etc.

Cut the right-sized one in-half - else they are too long and unwieldy.

You can get them from most autoparts stores. don't try and use the TXX series bits though, you'll likely make a mess of the heads with those.

I forget the correct name for them though.....

I don't think it really matters at purchase time- 'cause you can only buy the set of them at the local auto store; no singles. I'll look tonight and see which one from the set I cut down.

Don't worry about the size if I can only buy them in a set. Thanks for the linky and your help!

12mm and cut it as short as you can with a Dremel so you can put it in a short, 6 point socket with just the end sticking out and have good leverage. If it's too long, the bolt will be stripped pretty bad. Ask me how I know this.

NAPA sells them as singles if you don't want a set.

Thanks John.
I won't ask how you know about the stripping, but thanks for the warning!

If you're lucky you may find a 1/2" socket version of the 12mm triple-square. Didn't cut it short. Would be easier that way. These are used on VWs. I found it on-the-shelf at NAPA on a Sunday.

You might want to use a bit of heat on the bolts just in case someone locktighted them, but unless you plan on changing the rear main seal do not get carried away with the heat. When installing bolts it calls for two stages 40 NM then 90 NM or 30 ft lbs then about 68 Ft lbs. They are not supposed to be extremely tight but often are.

Thanks Glen. I will try NAPA for the socket version

Thanks Jim. Good Advise. I don't want to change the RMS so I will be careful with the heat.
