Front license plate *&^%$#@!!
My car has made it 16 years without having holes drilled in the front bumper. Now I have been stopped twice for it, the first time was a warning from trooper and last night a $28 ticket from the county sherriff.
There is no good place to mount the stupid thing. I hate the idea of having to drill holes in the bumper. Does anybody have a pic of a decent looking front plate mounting job on an S4 bumper?

The laws in CA to mandate a front plate on all cars....however it is seldom enforced, but techinally you do still have to have it :>(
The mount that came with my car worked, but none of them look good & it did leave two ugly holes in the bumper

You could probably do something with really strong magnets. It might not stay on at high speed but it would get you past your fix-it inspection. Then you could take it back off and go back to taking your chances.

Just the thought of getting your cordless drill out and pointing it at your front bumper makes one cringe. Take a picture while your drilling it,,, If it comes to that. Then place that Vontage music in the back ground.
I wished I would have filmed my brother with his sawall going after his lower spoiler. He nicked the oil line. Woo hoo woo woo hoo.

I'm surprised you went 16 years without getting stopped. Cops usually use the license plate as the radar target so I would have thought they'd notice it missing.

Low on the bumper cover, if you look real close, you will see two dimples the right distance apart to mount the license plate frame. I used the one that came with my 996, because I have a "greenie" tag for that car (no front tag).

See, thats the issue. There is NO good way to mount the bugger. Screwing it in above the cooling grille seems foolish, the car runs hot enough without some junk hanging in the way. Then, is it going to stay on fastened through the plastic with a couple of little screws? What about when it hits about 140....not that I would EVER do something like that
I can't just fix it temporarily. I flat told both of the cops I had no intention of drilling my bumper. The trooper was cool about it, the county guy pretty much vowed to stop me everytime he sees me. Considering that there is only one road in and out of here, I'm pretty sure he will get me again. It isn't so much the $28, I'd pay that several times over to avoid the drilling but I hate spending 20-30 minutes on the side of the road while the cop screws around writing the ticket.
I do think I worried the county guy a little though. I could tell that when he ran my info that my concealed carry permit came up. He was VERY careful when he re-approached the window. What a moron, I have a legal permit, I went through an FBI background check, I likely have FAR more training than him as well. I'm the good guy!
Also seems to be a Porsche thing. I have two MB G-wagens with winches mounted in front. Niether one has a front plate, niether one has ever been stopped for it. They see a red Porsche though and automatically I MUST be doing SOMETHING.

This may not help you with your problem, but my answer to not drilling my bumper, was to get my plate, a frame, 4 screws or bolts, some silicone, a dremel cutoff wheel, and some duct tape. I cut off the screws at the heads, and glued them onto the frame. I then used the silicone to glue it to the bumper. Then duct tape to hold it in place overnight. Pretty damn sturdy, but if you want to take it off after inspection, you just give it a good pull, and it will come off. The best part is the cutoff screws. It gives the cops the idea it is indeed screwed into the bumper, when it is not... Saves your bumper for the day you want to sell it to someone out of state, or it is also a good way to get around those "fix-it" tickets... Just slap it on when you need to pass an inspection...

thankfully we do not have this problem here.. but from experience in another state have you talked to your state DOT about an exemption? go down there, find some old guy who loves cars and explain the situation (ie, I'd have to drill the bumper, it lowers resale potential on a rare car..etc etc) you may be able to get them to give you the waiver
