IMO, a Merlin V-12 in a hydroplane doesn't make it a marine engine.

Also true. However the PFM wasn't really an auto powerplant. Porsche spend bizillions on the project, right up to the point where the president got, um, resigned for cost overruns. It also helped send Mooney into receivership. The commonality of the PFM to the 911 was purely cosmetic. Different cases(mounts & gear housing), crank, rods, pistons, pins, cams, heads, valves, etc. I think the only part that was left from the car engine was the name plate.
Sadly, Porsche could have done the job so well. Instead, they made all the wrong decisions. Should have studied the Limbach derivatives before throwing all that money into it.
You'd be hard pressed to find a Merlin in anymore hydros, they've all pretty much switched to turbine.

Anyone else up for a road trip?

I sent an e-bay question to him but no reply as yet. OK, maybe he is busy .... well, OK, maybe he didn't get the message ... well, OK, maybe he's out flying ... or .. maybe, he doesn't want me to see the car?
If he does say come on over, you all will get a full report with pictures.
Anyway, I still think the headlight looks wierd.
Cheers,
