Default Hobert car survives its 48th race day. (and driven home!) a couple of timing belt Q's

Just got back last night from a HOT weekend at Thunderhill with SCCA racing in the ITE Group 1. Tarmac temps were 136 F just before race time! (90 degrees in one of my neighbors trailers!)

Race started out with me next to the pole sitter in an Evo 348 rear wheel hp, Mullerized racer. we started to go two wide into turn 2, i backed out, and just tailed him, pulling everything the car had for every lap of the race. trying to hit almost redline on every major shift, and it paid off in a pretty decent lap time for my car. (off my .5 seconds vs my new hoosier time with don hanson in 2002) anyway, got some good video of the evo for the race, and we could see his james bond obsticle tossing strategy through several corners as he peppered me with stones until i had to fade back a few car lengths. I beat the car at laguna, but this car and driver are getting pretty quick. we will see what happends at laguna or Sears point later this season.
by the way, his best time in this race was 2:03.1 and mine was 2:03.5, and keep in mind, he shows up with a team of 10 people, 3 motor homes, one just for the crew and a car trailer with pit crew quarters and a 1,000,000 motorhome that looks better than my house on the inside!
Kind of cool honking as they are packing up the awnings and motorcycles as I leave to drive the 20 year old race car home..... again!!

He did run 2:01.9 in the 1st race (2 race weekend) and was running 2:01.9 in the pratice and qual as well. I was using those old hoosiers for one last time, and im now convinced, they are TERRIBLE!! (once passed a few heat cycles , toss them!!!) (DK, you were right!!)

now, its toyo RA1s all the way, unless i can find some single heatcycle hoosiers in the future! the toyos i used ran .5 seconds off my best time of 2:02.9 and those were a very new set of hoosiers. Not bad for a 2 year old, speedGT throwaway set of tires with 2,000miles on the street on them too!

In all your excitment, you forgot the "timing belt Q's"

I just got back from runnig my car around here in Vegas, checking some temps. Its getting hot in the SW! It must just be torture on your race tires Mark

107 at the airfilter
127 at the Supercharger inlet
170 at the Supercharger exit
125 at the intecooler exit...

Thats OFF boost!

Default Timing belt questions (warning light issue , AGAIN!)

so, as some of you guys know, i had the light come on at the Laguna SCCA race this spring. shut the car off on a decel, and started it back up and through the race, it never came back on .
this weekend, starting from the warm up lap of the race, the warning light cam on. did the same drill and reset the light, and then after 10laps, it came on again. I have a crude check hole drilled in the timing belt cover just at the point where you twist for tension with the Kempf too. feels ok, and off i go for the next days race. same thing happens about half way though.
the drive home 2200rpm in 5th gear fine for about a hour, then a down shift , light comes on. reset, comes on again just accelerating through 3000rpm.

I checked the tension before this weekend with the kempf too. 75% of the max window. calibrated with my small steel rod that i check tension through the hole with through the cam belt cover.

any ideas for why there would be a warning light go on if the tension seems to check out ok? oil in the tensioner may be leaking again, vibration, resonance of the belt at certain rpms? Im also still on the very front part of the pulley on the passenger side belt doesnt show wear on the edges though.

checked the timing belt timing through the holes in the belt covers and its dead right on.

any ideas???

Id check the copper contacts for dirt and corroasion.

The picture below shows what happens when the warning is triggered...the system isnt grounded because the contact is open, You would get the same indication if there was dirt or bad conections on the contacts shown as 1..2 and 3. #3 being where it plugs into the TB cover.

just an idea?

I always get a kick out of your desciption on how these guys come with a new rece-prepped car and massive budgets, and you show up with 20-year-old technology, running on dumpster finds, still manage to do quite well in the standings, and then drive home in the same street legal vehicle you just raced in. Ahhh the versitility of the 928. Do these guys have any concept of the Pareto priciple? It's all about 80/20, but in your case it's more like 99/01 - You have 99% of the performance for 1% of the budget. You would think they would take notice.

Ill have to put the BMW video from laguna with his hysterical quotes, my incar start laps, and this thunderhill 1-2 laps on a CD

the bmw may have the 1st race on camera where it took me 3/4 of the race to get around that e46 M3 racer! those darn, just too old hoosiers!!!
same ones i used at laguna, and they were two seconds slower than the toyos, that are MUCH older!

Thanks Tony, your the BEST!!!!

I always thought i knew how that system worked, especially, as i had it all apart last timig belt change, and i still didnt fully get it. NOW, i get it. great drawing. I thought the contact point was on the tensoner arm, not inside the tensioner plunger inside that insulating sleeve. who thinks of these designs!!!!

pretty cool (when it works right) now, i just got to figure out what the deal is with mine. like i said, the tension seems to be right, but im worried about some ossilation that may make some momentary slack in the belt and cause this warning. i also dont like that belt creep to the front of the pulley either!

Mark, any chance you could upload this race and make it available on-line? I would love to burst a local EVO driver's bubble.

Thanks.

there is the race from the BMW, of the 928 and the EVO

he was better suited to t-hill, but im sure ill have my hands full at laguna, but its the best track for the 928, so we will see.

right now all tied up
evo - 1 ,
928- 1

Can't wait to see the video. Excellent laptimes too. I was out at T-hill a week ago and it was warm (not 136 deg hot) and had a hard time getting below 2:10. Even with the smoother repaved Turns 6 & 8 I still couldn't get within 3 seconds of my previous best laptime. Your 2:03 on such a hot day on Toyos is smoking fast.

Cool MK!
You should try the new hoosiers - RS404s (or whatever). I've run them for one event and I'm happy saying they are about 1 sec per lap faster:
- they don't go totally 'greasy' when overcooked, takes much more to overcook them too.
- Wear is excellent on the new ones (manufactured after 44/04 - earlier than that had issue with cording insides). And running higher pressures too...

SHould be a good tire for the 928.

Ive heard good things about the new Hoosiers. However, a little pricey. the car i was racing against had a new set running. the toyos are pretty amazing though. i was hanging with him on some pretty demanding corners (100mph kink turn 8 at T-hill) he was sliding, i was barely sliding. cars have same power, same weight, but the 928 is WIDER and has bigger tires too! i think im going toyos from now on unless i get some more cash. then, ill probably use that money to replace those cams with the broken teeth!

by the way, your rear 315x17 hoosiers were not bad. should have used them last month at laguna, but the toyos were about 1 second faster, and much more comfortable and fun to drive. those hooseirs after they get older, are just plain scarry!!

Great video Mark. Best line from that driver was "Curse that V8"!
