Oil thermostat - Where is it ???

81 928, M28/16 engine - looking to check / replace oil thermostat, pulled pressure sender, plug above it, etc, no springs and thermostat to be seen anywhere!
Anyone have ideas where it is, if i even have one!

Thats where it is on my 88? I checked in the PET6 and it does show one above the pressure sender for your MY. The part #s:

928-107-171-01 Spring (above)
928-107-172-02 Regulator insert
928-107-173-00 Spring (below)
900-123-143-70 Sealing ring

Its really odd that nothing was there....that can't be good...were you getting weird oil pressure readings?

neilh 05-17-2005 12:27 PM

Not really, pressure was pegged at 5 + when cold, 3.5 + when hot over 2000 rpm, 1.5 at idle, but warning light would flash after fast run in high temp.

Strange they should be missing, though i did buy at 40k miles and 2 years old, now at 130k + and service records showed no indication of work being done on lower end, or pressure problems.
I have all the parts, so i'm going to put them back in and see what happens!

The 1980-84 USA engine did not have the heat exchanger in the radiator so no oil cooler hoses and no thermostat above the oil pressure sending unit since there was no place to direct the oil. If you are adding a cooler you would need the oil thermostat ,springs etc.

Thanks Jim, so you are saying it is correct as is, and i should not add the parts !

Unless it has oil cooler lines and a heat exchanger/cooler in the radiator you would not want the thermostat in place. So leave it out.

I looked in the PET6 for the 1981 model...it shows the "regulator"...is it a misprint?

Yes...they used the same blowup for the USA and ROW thus show parts which were not always used on all cars. Note it shows the oil cooler hoses as well. There are many incorrect items shown in the parts listings.

Very interesting that the ROW motors had oil coolers but the USA models did not (lucky ROWS get the autobahn)...

The very brown 1980 still has the 85 mph speedo which was mandated by federal laws and 55 mph was the legal maximum speed limit at that time.
