The Nevada DMV SCREWED me! Long
I have been lied to and screwed over by the NV DMV. They refuse to title the 84S that I bought in FL last month. Prior to buying the car I went in to the DMV office to ask them if I would be able to register the car. I told them all of the details that I knew about the vehicle and made sure to tell them that it had been issued a COD ( certificate of destruction ) by the state of FL. The woman at DMV told me I would be able to register it here after I took the car to a licensed garage to have the car inspected and the shop filled out the official DMV inspection form. All of this being done I went to the DMV to get my new 928 registered. I waited in line as usual, and went to the counter when it was my turn. As soon as I produced my COD document to the clerk it was all over. They acted like I was coming in to their office carrying the plague. They claim there is nothing they can do to help me.This is the final event in the life of a car they say. The fact that the car is in near perfect condition makes no difference to them. I need to deal with FL to get the COD changed to a salvage title since they were the issueing state. FL says they can not go back and change a COD once issued! Great! So I'm into this thing for 5K to this point and can't get it on the road legally. The thing that really pisses me off is the woman who told me that they would register the car doesn't even seem to care. Her attitude is "oh well, guess you should have checked it out first". I thought thats what I was doing when I checked with DMV before I bought the car! At this point I'm not sure what to do. Maybe I should just sell it for a parts car. I think the car is in to good of condition to part out. According to FL DMV that is all that can be done with this car. BS I say!

You might try to apply for a reissue title from another state. That or purchase a parts car with good title and transfer VIN. Do ypu have to have a title to register a car that old in your state?

Yes you have to have a title to register an older vehicle. I tried to run it through the Maine DMV as suggested by a used car dealer in my town. They weren't interested in helping me out since I was not a Maine resident.

There are a plenty of 928 cars that have clean titles, have been parted out, neglected or wrecked by their owners and have a vin number and title for the taking. Make a deal with an owner, tell them you want the car, then get the VIN and the title for a small price orthe extra parts car too. Swap the vin plaque out on the windshield pillar and door. Its not like your going to lose value on it at this point. It is already a car with no title and a COD, so this solution is better, just try to find a car near the same year, 83-84' should do it.
Changing the color is easy, they will just ask you the color when you register it and you can just say it's been painted gold.
I would imagine this could be illegal, because there is always a law that throws a monkey wrench in any clever plan. But you would appear 100% legal to a law enforcement officer and once everything was done there wouldn't even be a trace of vin swapping.
That way you can get your plates and drive that shark!

I understand that the car can legally be registered in Oklahoma and Washington state. If I were you I'd try to find out whether either of those states will issue a title of any kind for the car. If they will, "sell" the car to a resident of the state for $100.00. Have the new "owner" register the car and then buy it back and register it in Nevada.

Have not tried any lawyers yet. Actually, I have contacted the JAG office at my National Guard unit to ask for advice / help but they have yet to return my call. I have heard of states that will register an older vehicle with only a bill of sale, but I'm pretty sure I would have to have the car there for the VIN check.Any one have experience with this?

Thats really screwed! Should have gotten something in writing from her on the first visit. Thats what I do now having been screwed over by people that want you to think they know what they are doing but dont. I wish those kind of people could just say I dont know, let me check for you.

I don't know about Oklahoma. I live in Tulsa and called the DMV about the very car you ended up getting. The person I talked to had much the same reaction as the second person you spoke with in NV. It could be I got the wrong person on the phone but I wouldn't count on OK helping you out. None of the DMV personnel in any state I've dealt with seem anxious to go out of their way to help out someone in need. Any DMV HAS to be better than NY, who I dealt with for 16 years! I think they take courses in NONcooperation at the NYC offices.

Have you thought of contacting the DMV head in your area? Work above the mundane for a reasonable and creative and LEGAL remedy? Bean counters won't stick their neck out for any reason; sometimes it seems as if a lobotomy is a prerequisite for the job. If that won't work, as trite as it sounds, contact your state representative or senator, whose staff will have an ombudsman. OR you could establish an address in another state....wouldn't you then be a "resident"?

Jim,
Very dissapointed that you got the about face from the DMV - we were all pleased with your rescue of this car, and believed in a long and happy future. I hope you find a pathway to title it.
I had talked to Curt911 about this car 2-3 times prior to auction close, and had all my ducks in order to legally import and title it here: I never pushed the 'bid' button near the end, seeing that it was going to a good 'Rennlister' home - so believe that we are pulling for you ....

The person who said you could get a title said you just need to fill out the proper form, etc... how can they refuse you if you're using one of their standardized forms? If you can get your hands on that form it may have irrefutable language strong enough to blow down the ego of the bitch at the service counter...this wouldn't be the first time a DMV apparachik yanked someone's strings just because she can.

Jim you'll find a way. "The truth is out there" ... Can you talk with the person who told you frst it would be OK? Can you talk with a shop? I would find a state where such a vehicle can be registered and start there.
