Recommendations needed – amplifier, head unit and sub (LONG)
#16
Randy, I have been looking at the Infinity Basslink ..a 10" sub/enclosure and 100watt power supply with crossover built in. Costs about $250 or so and according to the dimensions it looks like it will fit (sans spare tire though I think). Local Circuit City has them in stock and i need to go and see the unit in person and listen to it hooked up before I spring for it...

Let me know how it works out, Tom. Thanks for the GTS congrats.
All I really need to do is find a way to hide the existing amp and swap that bastid bazooka for something that will hide in the spare tire well.

What size sub are you looking for? I collect car audio, and have tons of quality pre-owned equipment, including a large quantity of Illusion Audio drivers. Send me a pm/email and we can go over what you are looking for. I have some super-high end gear of the correct vintage of your GTS if you want a period acurrate install.

Like I said, the existing system is pretty good - I just need a way to hide the amp and replace the bazooka tube - something along the lines of what Adam has done (see his pics on page 1 of this topic).
I guess I should post a pic of the current setup.
Adam - I sent Rob an email. I'll see what he suggests. Thanks.

Yes..Rob F is the master....he constructed a system for a local 94 GTS..that looks awsome...used a Cup II rim as the woofer grill (I mentioned this system to Sterling when he was building his ;-) ) and if I remember correctly the false floor was painted in high gloss black with the amp recessed in it. Simply inspiring to look at ...and to hear. Rob typically uses Alpine head units. Not sure on what he recommends on speakers..but Adam is running Boston Acoustics in the front (with stock rears). Not sure on the make of his sub....

Man, I was into car sound yeeeeaars ago and have no clue as to what is good and bad these days. I plan to upgrade the stock sound system in my GTS, but I just want to replace the stock 10 speaker system with better ones and add a sub. I will probably replace the head unit and CD changer as well, but what I want to know is, are there spearkers out there that will replace the 10 factory ones with no mods to the panels?

My next stereo may very well be this Pioneer AVIC-N2 with a remote 6 DVD changer. GPS, Ipod input,CD, DVD, sirius and xm tuners, the list of features goes on. But its pricey: $2k for the head unit.

The system I installed is completely stealth using all of the original factory speaker placements. No cutting or anything. My previous post has all of the speakers with model numbers/brands.

If you haven't heard DTS and DVD-Audio mutlichannel sound in a good setup, you are missing out. Heinrich has heard the setup in my Durango. I am in the midst of trying to get the same sound in my S4. The Pioneer AVIC mentioned above plays those formats [Edit after post - I was wrong. This unit does not have multichannel support. The AVH-P7600DVD
or the earlier AVH-P7500DVD that I have purchased does.] Eclipse and others make AV headunits that support DTS and DVD-Audio. The only sticky point with multichannnel in the S4 is installing a center channel speaker. You can get away without it (center will be distributed to both fronts in most headunits if the center is set off). Anyway, I'm just encouraging a look at AV headunits that support mutlichannel. If you are going with a 4 channel amp + a sub channel, then stereo CDs or compressed music formats are not giving you what the hardware is capable of reproducing. DVD-Audio and DTS formats have not gone mainstream, although after waning and looking like they might go away, there has been some resurgence among car manufacturers, like Acura, to include support for them in their cars. Once you've heard a well-mixed 5.1 track it's hard to go back and seems an oversight not to include it if you are using multichannel amps in your project.

I have an Alpine CDA-7839 in-dash single CD head headunit/ radio. It is rated at 40W x 4 power out put, but RMS is a somewhat lowly 15W/ channel. Therefore, I have an Alpine MRP-F240 4 channel power amp, mounted out of the way, (but not indiscreetly), on the rear seat back on the driverside. These add-on amplifiers produce considerable heat, so I do not advise putting it somewhere without adequate air circulation available, regardless how tempting the spare tire well may seem. My amp is conservatively rated at 50W RMS x4. I used Eclipse SE-8245 4" speakers to replace the 4" drivers in the doors, and at the rear sides of the hatch. Th 6.5" speakers behind the front seats, are "stockers" for the time being. This setup is complemented by an Infinity Basslink 200 Wat RMS sub. This consists of the amplifier proper, and a 10" powered subwoofer sandwiched ontop of a 10" passive radiator. It gives a load of clean bass, and has a remote gain control, which I have mounted at the center console for easy access. Lots of different music, requires different bass levels to balnce perfectly in the vehicle, and I find this remote gain control for the powered subwoofer a tremendous advantage for the tuning to the music requirement.

Well yes it so happens I've heard that setup of Bill's and I can attest that it cannot be beaten for clarity and multiphonic excellence. I personally run DTS DVD player in two of my 928's and that DVD AUDIO setup of Bill's is superior.

Tom..
As a matter of convenience for me... my Basslink unit is free standing at the passenger side rear of the cargo hatch... (it comes with "treaded" legs for horizontal mounting)... (and...I haven't been able to make it "flop around", even under spirited daily driving of my 86.5). The cables are routed from the head unit, through the center tunnel (under the carpet) to the Alpine 4 channel amp, and from the pre-outs on the Alpine 4 channel amp...to the Basslink. It is a rather compact setup, considering it contains 2 10" speakers, AND an Infinity 200W RMS amp, but it isn't hidden, or enclosed in some carpeted MDF enclosure. It is just standing there in the corner on its own 4 feet. It hasn't caused me any storage grief either... (my large leather staff golf club bag still fits fine in the hatch), and this setup is easily revertable to a "stock" interior in the event that becomes necessary or desireable. I prefer to keep the spare and compressor available if needed. And, you won't believe the difference in the sound with this sub...It makes everything so much more phat and full sounding...I also have the CD shuttle (6 disk changer) to go with my Alpine head unit.
to answer your question though Tom...yes, without the "legs".. the Basslink will fit with room to spare in the spare tire well, you will have to make some sort of cover and access grille through the foam cover and carpet though if you choose this spot to install a Basslink. Easy Battery access though
