Doh! What an idiot! - (Now with pics!)
First off. This was entirely my fault. I cannot believe I did this!
So the other night I fixed the Cruise brain. That was great. Last night I put it all back. Then I remembered that a couple of years ago I messed witht he microswitch attached to the clutch pedal thinking that was the culprit of my woes. I had bent the little tab on it to try and get things to work. While I thought it helped, it really didn't. All I accomplished was that when I would depress the clutch pedal, the engine would rev.
Now with a proper brain it was time to set things back so that when I shift, it doesn't rev up.
So I pulled the tray and was getting ready to get under there. But the brake handle was in the way. So I put the car in gear, and released the handle.
ALL IS GOOD. I get under there, work my mojo, and think let's test this baby out. hopped in the car, and fired her up. Vrrrrommmmm! We're ready to go.
Hit the button on the opener and the door starts to go, then stops. WTF?!
Got out to see what the deal was... Mother !
You see, while I was fixing the switch, I had to depress the clutch several times. This allowed the car to roll slightly and rest against the garage door unbenounced to me. When I opened the door, it took a nice 4" x 1/2" gouge out of the nose.
Anyone have a front license plate bracket they might be willing to donate?
Lesson learned. Next time chock the wheels!
DOH!
By the way, the switch is broken. I need one of those too!

Aw man that stinks. Just when you lavish a little love on the old girl something bites you. Murphy's Law gets me all the time as well. Sorry I don't have a spare Lic. plate bracket. Maybe check the free parts giveaway at the top of the 928 list and post a query there?

Bummer;
Sadly, I have a couple of those kinda stories as well.
I have a few spare brackets that I can toss you one. But I don't have the plastic blocks that the bracket mounts to.
Whats your address, I send one out Monday.

Andrew.......can't help with the bracket but can share your pain. Wife gets in her Jeep which is parked in the garage, starts vehicle and pushes the door opener remote. She then proceeds to back out but the door has only half opened.........hits the door hard enough to knock it off its runners and smash the Jeeps rear window. The 928 which is occupying the other side of the garage is now covered in glass with the door hanging by a thread precariously above it and its -25C.
I guess it was a case of the door being half closed!!!

Andrew - does the #1 appear in your state issued tags? If so, just fill in the other #'s with a felt tip marker .....
Seriously, hope the blemish disappears - nice car!

Andrew, sh*t happens, don't be to hard on yourself. It could be worse. My father, a BMW nut, has this 84 325 with only 16k miles on it. Total cream puff. Well, one day after doing a little work on it, I think changing the plugs, he reaches through the window and turns the key to start it up while standing next to it. In 1984 there was no interlock between the ignition and clutch, and you guest it, it fired right up and took off right into the concrete retaining wall at the front of the garage. Believe it or not, it kept running and spinning the tires while it was stuck against the retaining wall. It took a month to get the burnt rubber smell out of the garage, and several thousand dollars to get the car repaired. Fortunately, something good did come out of it. He never ever gives me sh*t when I screw up now, because he knows I'll just bring up the Bimer in the wall incident and shut him right up. Stuff happens, as long as it only happens to "things", we can play another day.

I've received an offer for the bracket and the cruise switch. (Thanks to those who offered!)
I took the car out today - first real drive this year. GOD DAMN! These cars are so fricken awesome. I just love them. But I don't have to tell you about that, do I.
Dinner is ready. Chow. I mean... Ciao!

Touch up paint job. I haven't had a front license plate in the last 20 years, although if you reinstall yours, no one will ever see the gouge.

I've got some touch up paint that I just received in the mail... been dying to see if it's a good color match. The problem is that this really gouged the plastic. I guessl I'll try both and see which I like better.

In 1988, while in college, I bought an old Opel GT. Being the idiot that I was at the time, I managed to stuff a huge box with TWO 15" woofers and a 600 watt amp behind the front seats . I spent all day in the garage installing this stuff. That night, after I had finished, I was going to go pick up my buddy and go booming around town. I fired up the car and took off out of the garage.......I forgot that the passenger door was wide open (lol). That door bent clean back flat to the front fender. I was so mad at myself that I sat down next to it and cried. I managed to bend and hammer things back to where I could get the door closed with a lot of force and went out, mashed door and all, to pick up my friend. Later that night, he shattered the window all over the inside of the car trying to slam the door.
SuperDOH!!!
