Gosh, if it wasn't for the parts of Earnie's lead foot, this oil would almost have some nutritional value! After all, it contains iron, potassium, calcium, zinc,... all minerals the body needs - no?

Nicole,
Add a little wine vinegar and it's actually quite tasty on a salad. Also helps to keep the joints limber!

Default How does Amsoil compare?

I just struck a deal with a local Amsoil synthetic dealer to get some 25,000 mile rated lubricants for my cars.
Has anyone heard good things about them?

Also, who does the oil testing at a decent price?

Blackstone charges $20.00 plus another $10.00 for the TBN. Look them up on the internet. They'll send you the collection kit and I got the report the same day they did the test.

Hi.
Good one Ernest!
Great to see somebody else following on with Used Oil Analysis (UOA)

I have compared your results with my averages over eight UOAs (4 with Shell Helix Ultra - 4 with Delvac 1) and certain aspects that are Delvac 1 5w-40 specific

1 - The "Universal Average" means very little in our case and some elements are oil specific
2 - The TBN of 8.8 is excellent and a low of 2 is allowable with this oil (good for another years use)
3 - Your wear metals are about the same as my averages over all eight UOAs
4 - The silicon count shows that your air intake is running "clean" and no induction leaks exist
5 - The absence of fuel or coolant is a great engine health indicator

Blackstone's comment about Lead level is erroneous. A virgin sample of Delvac 1 typically shows up to 5ppm! Mine is averaging 6ppm too - inconsequential when the upper limit is 50ppm

The chemical structure of the oil means very little as these are primarily oil specific. Calcium has a multifunction in Del 1 including Anti Wear (AW) Zinc is an AW additive too. Delvac 1 5w-40 is a sophisticated Group 5 HDEO synthetic having about 26% ester content. This is ideal in engine that are not used each day due to the polar attarction esters are known for

Ernest - All in all the report shows that your engine has low wear metal uptake rates via the oil (like mine) and that the Delvac 1 5w-40 is "not run in" at 6000 miles! It will easily go to 12k or 12 months with a saftey margin too!

This oil certainly seems to be a perfect match to the 928 engine

Ernest - Thank you for publishing your results

Warren928 - unfortunately Amsoil does not make a comparable oil to Delvac 1 5w-40 either in specification or in performance.
While Amsoil lubricants are of good quality it is unlikely you will achieve 25000miles from any Amsoil product without significant thickening after about 12k

Kind regards
Doug

Hi Doug,
I must say that when I received the report my first thought was "What will Doug have to say about it?" I'm gratified to hear that it's comparable to the excellent results you've been getting. I don't anticipate another oil change for one year, however if my shoulder heals in time I'll be tracking the car and will undoubtedly be adding oil as it's blown by.
Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.

Best Place to get your oil analyisis on with on-the-spot testing:

Whenever I had the oil changed on my big trucks I used the on-site machines in many of the oil change centers near big truck stops that are all over the country. I sent some samples off but waiting for the results took forever. Prices ranged from $15 to $30 and you can bring your own sample in or they can take it for you...
