928 Track Car build thread UPDATE #1
UPDATED!
I figured I would start a thread to document the build up of my 928 track car. It's a 1986 S 5 speed with about 115k miles, peeling gold paint, and brown interior. All work will be done in my garage. For 2005 and a fair share of 2006, it will most likely be an open track car, then once my skills get better, I'd like to go racing sometime in 2006 in ITE, GT2, and possibly the new AV8SS. I'm hoping to have it done by the first of June. Plans are:
Maintenance:
-New Ford 24lb fuel injectors
-New oxygen sensor, synthetic oil, synthetic tranny oil, random vacuum lines, timing belt, air filter, and fuel filter
-Poly front suspension bushings and new steering rack bushings
-New shift coupler and ball socket
-New ignition wires
-New tranny mounts
-New spark plugs
Modifications:
-Strip out interior, stereo, AC, inner bumpers, replace pop up headlights with stationary lights, and any other unnecessary components (leave heat, will be driven on street)
-Remove sunroof, TIG weld in a piece of sheetmetal, and smooth
-Full repaint to Lapis Blue with a white roof striped with silver (cool design, hard to describe)
-Interior will be sprayed with truck bedliner for sound/heat supression, ease of application (don't want to clean interior for weeks just to paint), and it is easy to clean. The car will be driven on the street, probably more than I would like. Gotta make it bearable
-Kinesis K28R 18x8 and 18x10.5 (got a good deal)
-Possibly build custom front bumper/side skirts out of fiberglass if time allows (molded from clay)
-Double adjustable coilovers (possibly with heims), brand undecided
-Weltmeister front swaybar, homemade adjustable rear droplinks
-Carbon fiber dash (needs a new dash, found a good deal for under $200)
-Full roll cage from 1.75x.120 DOM tubing
-Cobra Suzuka seats, 6 point harnesses, Momo Trek steering wheel
-Dual stainless 2.5" exhaust, Magnaflow or Borla mufflers, w/ stock tubular manifolds for now
-Autothority chip
-Possibly a RRFPR-should I get one?
-993 brakes w/ adapters (still looking for old spindles)
-Autometer AF meter
-Some type of rear spoiler, undecided
-928 Motorsports solid motor mounts
-Retard cam timing for high RPM HP
-Short Shifter
-LSD will have to wait, but sometime next year
The list will probably get larger as the project goes on, but that's it for now. I can't wait to finish it! I'll post updates as I proceed. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm sure I will have a bunch of questions. Here are some pictures of what I have gotten done so far; I've been really busy with other stuff the past few weeks, but hopefully now I'll be able to get a bunch of stuff done. I have also attached pictures of the main tools I'll be using to get the job done.
Pictures: Front 3/4, interior a few weeks ago, rear 3/4, interior a few days ago, Pro-Tools tubing bender, ESAB heliarc 160i, Ingersoll-Rand 60 gal. compressor, Hobart MM175 w/ band saw, over 100 feet of DOM tubing, and the 1/2 done project that had to be put on hold for the 928!

Sounds like fun but I would send your wheels to Kinesis and have the fronts changed to 10's. They should be able to do that by just changing the inner hats.

I probably will once I have the money to do it. 8's will have to do for now, but next year I will optimize the sizes. I just spent $650 on parts from you guys! Right now I'm planning on running 245's or 255's up front and 295's in the rear.
I have a question for you-- when you removed your sunroof, did you cut out all of the unnecessary sheetmetal from the interior that covers the panel? Looks to me like it is completely redundant, especially if I am installing a roll cage.

When I did mine I completely removed the roof panel and replaced it with a non sunroof version. It was lots of work but it also made welding the cage easier. I would get with Constanine Golovaty and see if he has any more of the carbon replacement panels he made.

Thanks Mark. I'll check up on that, although for some reason I really want to fill it in and smooth it... for the challenge I guess. Building the car is 1/4 of the fun.
Just to let you know, your car has been a huge inspiration for my project. I love to check out your pictures and see what you did to your car; it helps me grasp what I should do. Thanks!

Mark,
Looks like you are a handy guy, and building is therapeutic and rewarding. However, buying a track car that is done is usually cheaper than building one.
I haven't signed up with member status on this board yet, so this message might get pulled, but my track car is for sale. Various reasons - I'm still a 928 gear head, and continue to be a supporter.

Best of luck Mark, and yes, i promise you that list will grow. If I had to do it again I would gradually turn it into a race car with time, istead of starting from scratch. I'm so close now and yet I still have over 50 issues on my "to do" list before i can hit the track.
Keep the updates and pics coming.

Sounds like you have a well-planned project ahead. I talked to Brad yesterday & he told me he had sold the wheels to a 928 guy. I've seen those wheels in person and they're beautiful. With the wider inner halves, they'll be perfect. Also, you might want to consider adding an Accusump to the list. Good luck on your project.

Thanks Pierre. If I had the time/money, I would build or buy a widebody to make it look similar to yours. Your car looks incredibly mean with the new flares.
Dennis-
I can't wait to get the wheels. I think they will look great with the paint scheme I have planned. Thanks for answering my questions in the past about your car, as you have helped inspire me to build a 928. I have watched your videos hundreds of times. Keep them coming!
I really should add an accusump to the list... that will probably happen sometime in '06 though; I can't afford it now. How much are the parts to fit an accusump? I'm betting they are out of my budget.

Glad you enjoy the vids. I don't have a Devek catalog at hand, but I think their racing accusump kit is ~$1k. I know Kibort has run without it and puts his trust in Amsoil, but I'm still leery about it. If you can, try to put it higher in the priority list. You want to build reliability into the car before spending $$ on all the other things that will make it fast.

i cut all that stuff out to get the room and not have all the metal protrusions and sharp edges. I used 1/4 inch diameter rod to flill in around the roof panel to take up the gap and welded the sunroof in place. Before i welded it back i cut the inner panel out of the sunroof so i had just the outer skin .
takes a lot of time due to the care you have to take to prevent the distortion of surrounding metal and then of course the grinding, filling and sanding that goes with it.
