I have been compiling information on exhaust parts and was looking for pricing on X pipe ( or like configurations) setups with and without high flow cats. Who sells them and how much are they?

We had the X-chronicles post a while back but there was so much screaming, the basic message was lost in translation.

Would like to know the same info as James... Also, do the x-pipes ever come with cats, or does the buyer always have to put those on?

There are probably two desireable flavors but multiply those by the MY configuration differences:

1) I would want an out of the box, bolt-on solution that has those high flow cats that we have seen.
2) Others will want no cats.

The person that goes to make them first should carefully consider the market. If anyone is serious about going to production soon, they should do... (gasp, not another one!) a poll to see the numbers behind the preferences.

I suggest that 86.5s get produced first and in obscene quantities.

Those high flow performance cats didn't seem expensive to me.

Cost in terms of additional welds, etc or just cost of materials/product?

The Random Cats are about $500 per PR. They may have dropped in price since I got my system done last year. The X-Pipe costs what it costs, and the Randoms do not need an airpump to make the car pass smog... You can however, attache the airpump fitting.. In addition, you get a CARB Certificate with the Random Cats...

Why run no cat when the cat won't cost you power...?

Louis Ott has a good writeup on his site.. It appears that several people are now making the X pipe for 928's..

IMHO, it is better to buy the cats already welded to the pipe. If I recall correctly, Specialists will be offering an X pipe with other cats for a very inexpensive price.. Their cats are less than the Randoms..

buy an X-pipe and weld 2 magnaflow cats right after the cross over and problem solved. Affordable and easy. I intend to do the same next year since I've discovered a small crack on the weld where the catalytic converter on the passenger side meets the downpipe.

Shoot the simple list will get longer.

Some will want the performance cats and just sufficiently pass smog. Others will want to hook up the air pump. I am afraid that the air pumpers may be the minority. Anyhow, unless there is a knockout or a threaded air add/delete line in the mix, we are looking at a third option.

It had been previously mentioned in another post that oxygen sensor location needs may vary as well.

Perhaps these various configurations are where the vendors can differ and not fully overlap product offerings? Just a thought - I don't care to revisit the X Chronicles!

Sure, we COULD Get our own cats, but i'd just prefer that someone else did the leg work for me and all I gotta do is bolt on a single unit in the comfort of my garage.

I'm more than willing to pay the extra $500 for a pair of cats... especially if they come with CARB stickers and don't affect horsepower... heck, didn't one of the centrifugal guys show a power increase after adding cats? Now THAT's what I'M talkin' about!

I just want what we had before. A nice inexpensive X. If you want more, that's cool but do it later ... otherwise we're without a nice easy cheap solution for guys like me with 5 cars and limited budgets. 5 x 500 is TOO much

BTW, I haven't welded nuthin' in nearly 20 years - and back then, all I really did was patch-weld to fix a hole in a muffler. I would just assume have the cats already attached to the X to simplify things. I haven't looked under the car recently enough to see what hooks up and where downstream of the cats... Something probably will have to get welded, eh?

I want something to bolt on and go. I am a good at using a socket wrench.

Heinrich - your point is well taken. Just getting one commercially available is key.

I, on the other hand, will wait until I can get what I want. Perhaps I am not the only one inclined to wait?

George made more power with his Random Cats than without them... As we live in CA, I'm all for the more power with cleaner emissions.. I also have Randoms on my car with X-pipe etc.., and will post the power gains once the SC is finally installed..

For those that live outside of CA, I would still go with cats, and a Bolt On System.. The bung for an O2 sensor, and an air pump can all be installed by the Mfr. and shipped with plugs... Of course, a system without would be good for the racers as well.. Whoever is going to make and sell, good luck with the business..!

Richard, how's your SC setup going? With that wicked exhaust system and you're knowledge of forced induction - i have high expectations!
