Default Spoilers

What are the differnt types of rear spoilers for the 928 and does anyone have pics of them? Also, which ones can I mount on my car without having to do major body work to mount it?

The S4 rear spoiler fits nicely: Four holes must be carefully laid out and drilled in the hatch. A small cold chisel cut on the inside plus a ball pein hammer to tap a channel for the hold down nut is finisned off with a finger full of body putty: Much simpler than it sounds - and as it has been done before, the dimensions are available .... for the usual rennlist fee .
A 1980 is in the foreground - with a S4 spoiler.

if you have no spoiler I would suggest going with the S4 style.. the S spoilers require altering trim and cutting more holes in the body than the S4... and the S4 just plain looks better

If you add a rear spoiler, make sure you also add a front spoiler. Otherwise your car will be out of aerodynamic balance at high speeds and tend to understeer.

Default not stock

here is my take on the whole issue. after i deleted the rear spoiler from my S2 it was less stable (although that might actualy have been an alignement issue) so i added this e-tech spoiler in aluminium. not stock but i like it!

Nicole same could be said for when you have a full gas tank or a nearly empty one. The amount of rear downforce is insignificant when compared to the weight of the 928. The extra 10.5 lbs which the wing weighs is a large component of it's "downforce".

I currently have a 3 piece spoiler on the car right now. i was wanting to remove it and put the s4 spoiler on it. Does anyone have a front chin spoiler they may want to sell in the near future? My car doesn't have one and I would like to get one. For those of you that have one, is it black or do you paint it to the color of your car??

The front S spoiler is black, with with a pebbled surface texture. It makes the car look a bit meaner and theoretically improves aerodynamics, but I've never been able to tell the difference. YMMV.

If you plan on entering and exiting many driveways, or going over speed bumps, you may want to skip the chin spoiler.

if you take the 3 piece spoiler off you have to change the rear hatch and side window trim, as well as fill the holes in the body

rixter, why do i have to do all of that? Do you have any pics to show why that would need to be done so I know what you are talking about?? Thanks.

I'd be happy to take some closeups tomorrow.. but here is why

the 2 small side pieces are screwed into the body (look under the bottom edge in the middle of one of yours).. the top edge of these 2 pieces is fitted to the back corner of the side windows and the trim does not go all the way into the rear corner
if you remove the spoiler you would want to change to full trim for these windows (not the easiest thing to find)
the hatch situation is similar,
the center of the spoiler is screwed into the hatch, and since it sits on the bottom and side edges of the hatch window, you would need the trim for a pre S car...

oh yeah... and be prepared to repaint the filled areas and the area under the current S spoiler as it will most likely not match

Hi Garth,

>finisned off with a finger full of body putty:

FYI, The next time just use a 3/8 socket extension (with duct tape on the end so it doesn't scratch the paint) and a hammer. A few firm properly placed blows with the extension horizonal to the vertical sheetmetal on the underside of the hatch where the studs come thru and the washers and nuts will go right on. No sheetmetal cutting or putty required and almost looks factory.
