FYI, The next time just use a 3/8 socket extension (with duct tape on the end so it doesn't scratch the paint) and a hammer. A few firm properly placed blows with the extension horizonal to the vertical sheetmetal on the underside of the hatch where the studs come thru and the washers and nuts will go right on. No sheetmetal cutting or putty required and almost looks factory.

When I did mine 12-14 years ago, I recall being chicken-sh#t scared about wacking the frame and sending a stress crack across the glass: I'm much braver now - especially when I get my hands on someone elses car .

I could be wrong but I think the GTS has the same design of spoiler as the S4 but a few extra inches on the each end, it makes a difference in my opinion for the better.
Something else to look into is the jacque lamond? web site, somtimes on ebay, they offer a whale tail upgrade for around $400 if dosh is plentiful which is also worth considering.

I just did the conversion on my 81 to get the S4 spoiler on it. I didnt do the chisel part of it, which is a great idea to use one. Its pretty easy. The hardest part is laying the holes out right and drilling them right. I am painting my spoiler to match the car. I put it on in black and it kinda looked funny against the color of the paint. Make sure who ever you buy the window trim from gives you all of the little mounts as well because your old ones for the hatch are useless.

The GTS and S-4 wing are exactly the same dimensions the GTS is painted body color. The rear hatch is STEEL not aluminum and the S-4 GTS has a recessed area for the bolts to fit correctly. as mentioned the trim around the 1/4 windows is different as is the rear hatch moulding completely different. Since this car has had the S rear spoiler added odds are the window rubber and trim is still original. As mentioned there would need to be holes filled paint and bodywork on the quarter panels if the S spoiler is removed

fan4life, just make a start and remove the side parts to the 3-piece rear spoiler and you will see how much further work or parts might be necessary. you might find that you dont need to repaint anything and that the trim is ok too.

"The 1984 928's did not come with a spoiler"

Michael - That is what my spoiler looks like. It looks ok but I want to upgrade
Nick - I remeber that I took off my spoiler last summer and the spoiler was just a bolt on and the trim was fine. I will have to fill some holes but I plan on repainting the car in the near future

here are pics..
1st is S car with spoiler removed, note the window trim doesn't go all the way into the corner..
2nd is non-S with S4 wing.. note the trim goes completely around the window..
IIRC I have 1 FULL SETUP LEFT... both window trims, hatch trim AND an S4 spoiler.. if anyone is interested I'd like $300 for the whole setup

Hi 928fan4life,
Here is another rear 928 spoiler. It's a Jacqumond AeroDyne wing (formerly the Strosek rear wing). It's a bolt on replacement for the S4/GTS wing.
Cheers,
Mike

A poster on a different 928 message board recently tried to educate me on the fact that all spoilers of today's cars are just for the looks and have no function - including the spoilers on the 928. Only the really big spoilers on race cars and dragsters have a purpose!
Of course, he must be right - and the guys at Porsche are complete idiots for investing Millions into their own wind tunnel. Every drag racer can find the right adjustment of the spoiler in his garage or the pits - just by loking at the spoilers (or by experience, after the racer has lifted off a few times).
Wind tunnels are for wimps only... LOL!!!
