928 GT
I am looking at a car in Arizona that is listed as an 1991 S4/GT. However it has an automatic. I thought, based on this link:
http://www.928s4vr.com/928s4005.htm
that the GT only had manual trans mission. Is that correct?

Yes. That is correct. All GTs have 5-speeds. All '90 and '91 5-speeds are GTs. In '89 there were 5-speed S4s and (5-speed) GTs. All '90 and '91 S4s are auto. GTSs can be either auto or 5-speed.

In either case you don't really know what's what until you see a picture of what's between the front seats. GTs have been advertised as S4s by the less-knowledgable before.

Love when that happens
That's how I got the 1990 5 speed "S4"

My PO didn't know iwhat he had there either. Nor did I until I read the options label and saw the magic numbers. I could have passed out with excitement and had a hard time keeping a straight face.

A GT is nothing more than an S4 with option M639 ("Version GT").
Calling a GT an S4 is therefore technically correct. All GTs are S4s, but not all S4s are GTs.
Proof: you cannot distinguish the GT from any other S4 (of the same MY) by the VIN, as you can e.g. distinguish an S4 from an S or a GTS.

Thilo: The German 928 GT brochure from 2/89 describes the GT as a separate model. I think from '90 model year onwards, the GTs no longer had the option code you mention.
It also says it has tire pressure monitoring system - something I have never seen on a GT before the '90 model year, or with the clubsport rims pictured in the brochure.
Do you know, if the German GTs always had RDK? Was there RDK with forged clubsport rims?
The brochure als says that limited slip differential was standard on the GT - is that correct? I know the electronic limited slip was standard from '90 model year onwards, but do all '89 GTs have a mechanical limited slip differential?

Thilo, by your definition only '88 CS is separate model from same model year regular 928 as it has different VIN sequence. SE and '89 CS do not, so they are S4 also. Not that it makes much difference. If seller wants to get $nK more from his/her GT it's better to advertise it as GT. More older they get there is less change of finding seller who do not know what the car is.

OK, OK, you know the details better than I do. ;-) Actually, I just read what I wrote above on the German 928 Forum, where someone was trying to establish the number of GTs built. Difficult, due to the reason stated, as someone else then pointed out. The Austen book does not (cannot?) break down the numbers of S4 Autos and GTs. As for selling or other purposes, there certainly is nothing wrong with the GT designation, but if someone calls a GT an S4 he/she is not entirely wrong. The point I was trying to make.
Call 'em what you want, GTs are GREAT cars. The engine is a bit "sweeter" and "revvier" than the 5.4 in my GTS. (Then again, I much prefer the GTS body style...)
